CDE/SOC 312: Adolescence Forming an Identity Learning Objectives: 1. To describe self-conceptions and the changes that take place between childhood and adolescence. 2. To explore the two dimensions along which to examine identity development. 3. To identify different ways of resolving an identity crisis. 4. To discuss the role of parents and non-parental adults on adolescents process of identity development. PART A: When asked to describe herself, Larissa would say that shes quiet until she gets to know you, then shes talkative and silly; shes a good friend; she enjoys her neighborhood babysitting jobs; her ukulele skills are improving now that shes practicing more; and shes considering becoming vegetarian. For as long as she can remember, Larissa has been planning to be a special education teacher like her dad. There was even an unspoken expectation that she would attend the same college. The idea of following in her dads footsteps always seemed like a natural fit. However, now with college applications due, Larissa isnt so sure about these plans anymore. It seems that shes unsure about a lot of things lately; shes even questioning whether she wants to go to college at all. Senior year has brought about a lot of stress; she doesnt have an answer whenever shes asked about her plans following graduation. Larissa feels stuck every time she is confronted with this big question. She has been seeking the input of her dad and friends. Larissas dad is supportive but is starting to worry that she feels so uncertain about her future. Her two older sisters had it all ?together when it came to their hopes, dreams, and plans about life. Larissas friends arent much help either; all they talk about is how excited they are to start college. A couple of people, including Larissas best friend, are even planning on moving out of state. It seems so easy for everyone else, yet Larissa is at a complete loss for what she wants to do once graduation rolls around. One day after class, Ms. Thompson noticed Larissa still on the computer. Portugal?, asked Ms. Thompson. Larissa always found Ms. Thompson easy to talk to so she told her about a new band shes been listening to and explained that theyre from Portugal. Every time she got online, Larissa found herself googling Portugal and other places around the world. Larissa was fascinated by the different cultures she read about. You sure seem excited about this, said Ms. Thompson. Ive been fortunate to travel quite a bit but I never made it to Portugal. Have you ever thought about visiting? Larissa never expected anyone, especially an adult, to entertain this idea. Finally Larissa replied, I dont think my family can afford it. Ms. Thompson asked, Are you familiar with study abroad programs? That might be a way for you to travel and experience another culture. Larissa hadnt heard of this before. She never knew she could combine her interest in traveling with school. This definitely gave her something to think about. Eager to learn more, Larissa rushed home and began googling.
