Homework 3
Due Monday 3/20. Include the results from the SPSS output for the relevant questions.
SPSS
We will be using the PewKids data. Go to Canvas and download the PewKids dataset into SPSS. You must include the output (confidence intervals and t-test) with this homework to receive full credit.
1. Linneman has created an index of parental concern about the internet: XYpnetconindex. This measures how concerned parents are about their kids’ experiences on the internet. Find the 95% Confidence Interval for the mean of XYpnetconindex (2 points).
2. You are curious whether parental concern about the internet differs across rural, suburban and urban communities. Use the variable XYcommunity to calculate 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) for each of these subgroups, looking at the outcome of XYpnetconindex.
a) 95% CI for parental concern for Rural communities (2 points)
b) 95% CI for parental concern for Suburban communities (2 points)
c) 95% CI for parental concern for Urban communities (2 points)
3. The index of parental concern about the internet (XYpnetconindex) varies from 0-9, and we are going to treat it as a ratio-level variable. You want to know if there is a difference between people whose child has been bullied online and those whose child has not been bullied online when it comes to parental concern about the internet. Run a t-test on the outcome of XYpnetconindex, using the variable XYkbulliedonline to compare people with children not bullied online to people with children who have been bullied online (0=Not Bullied Online, 1=Bullied Online).
a) What is the mean for parents with kids who have been bullied online? (2 points)
b) What is the mean for parents with kids who have not been bullied online? (2 points)
c) What is the difference between the means of these two groups (bullied and not bullied)? (1 point)
d) Looking at the row where equal variances are not assumed, provide the:
1) t-value (2 points)
2) p-value (2 points)
3) 95% confidence interval (2 points)
e) Is the difference between parents of bullied kids and those without bullied children statistically significant at the p<.05 level? (2 points)
f) What is the null hypothesis? (1 point) Can you reject the null hypothesis? (1 point)
g) What is your level of confidence? (1 point) What can you conclude in terms of your findings? (1 point)
