Based on your assigned readings for this week, as well as your experiences and previous knowledge, what is your understanding of the phrase “the personal is political”?
1. The phrase “personal is political” conveys that opposing and destroying oppressive structures requires group action. It stresses how common systemic problems often serve as the foundation for personal struggles, experiences, and decisions and how solutions to these problems depend on collective action and unity. That individual work alone is insufficient to bring about change. “Personal is political” emphasizes the connection between individual experience and political power systems. It is a method of acknowledging that many problems that seem solely personal or unique are rooted in structural injustices and power gaps. This expression recognizes that individual experiences and decisions are not independent of larger social, economic, and political institutions. Larger societal and political frameworks may have an impact on a woman’s personal decision.
The notion that the personal is political has sparked several political and social reforms, including a greater awareness of problems like domestic violence and sexual harassment and the realization that these problems require policies to be addressed. Additionally, it has sparked the growth of feminist thought and activity that aims to overthrow patriarchal institutions and establish more just social, economic, and political frameworks. 2. My understanding of “the personal is political” is that women around the world have first-hand knowledge of how personal things in our lives have become a political debate. Examples would be birth control, abortion, gay rights, and even basic human rights. Women’s personal choices have become questioned and thrust into the spotlight for political agenda. It seems that we are not to be trusted enough with our own bodies and minds to make choices that would only affect those that choose to make the decision. For example, an abortion is an extremely personal choice. But there are those that have very strong feelings against it and think that a woman should not be able to make that very personal decision. I don’t think either side is right or wrong. I think it’s completely up to the individual woman and her situation. In Carol Hanisch’s article, The Personal is Political, she says that “Women are messed over! Not messed up!”(Hanisch). I found that to be such a powerful statement because for centuries, women are looked upon as these fragile beings that should keep their mouth shut and not rock the boat with their opinions. This statement says that women are not messed up for having opinions and beliefs of their own, but instead they are messed over because they are not taken seriously with their opinions and beliefs. She’s a bit hysterical, just let her be. (major eye roll)
