Ryan was placed in Residential Care when he was 16 years old. He was significantly traumatised by the abuse and neglect he experienced as a child, and had also been reported to child protection services more than twelve times.
Ryan was referred to a regional homelessness service, prior to accessing residential accommodation in OOHC. From the age of 14-16 years of age Ryan sought refuge with an elderly friend Gavin who was a former friend of his paternal grandmother. Gavin provided a home and some stability for Ryan during this time however Ryan was not engaged in any form of education and Gavin struggled to provide holistic care for Ryan due to his deteriorating health. Ryan was fond of his friend Gavin and viewed him as a grandfather however Gavin relied on Ryan being “self sufficient at times” due to his chronic health condition. Gavin passed away when Ryan was 17 years of age and remained in contact with Ryan until his passing. Gavin knew he would be unable to continue to provide care for Ryan nor was it in his best interests but maintained that he tried his best to help.
As a child Ryan experienced neglect and abuse. The first notification about Ryan was made when he was just 4 months old, and the second, when he was twelve months old. At 11, he left his family home due to conflict and domestic violence.
As a result of Ryan’s early trauma, he exhibited violent and aggressive behaviour, and because of his vulnerability, has been sexually exploited from a young age which has resulted in additional complex health issues.
Ryan’s cognitive development is well below his chronological age and lack of consistent education and support the last time Ryan consistently maintained contact with an educational service was when he was 13 years old.
Since Gavin’s passing Ryan is reluctant to seek medical attention from GP’s or therapists as he believes that “they did not save Gavin, so they can’t help me”.
Ryan has recently moved into a new Residential care setting in a regional area upon Ryan’s request as the former residential setting was in an inner sitting suburb and he found the population and congestion overwhelming and would trigger his anxiety.
