Who represents your congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives?
First, look up your nine-digit U.S. postal service zip code: https://tools.usps.com/go/ZipLookupAction_input
Second, go to the website: http://www.votesmart.org/
To find your U.S. House Representative:
Enter your address with your nine-digit zip code on the line to the right of the bright red words “I SPY” where it reads “Enter a politician’s name or your address” (located above the row of blue file folders).
After you hit return, a column with the names of all of your national, state, and local elected officials will appear.
Scroll down until you find the name of the incumbent (current office holder) representing you in the U.S. House. Click on that person’s name so you can start to explore and learn more about your U.S. House member. (Make sure you find your U.S. House incumbent and not your U.S. Senator or State House member of State Senator).
Open on the BIO folder for your member and spend some time exploring his or her experience and background.
Open the RATINGS folder to see how your member votes on various issues. (Make sure you read “How to Interpret These Ratings.”)
Go back to the BIO folder to find your U.S. House member’s own official Washington, DC Website (provided on the right-hand side under the “Contact Information” column). Spend some time exploring your member’s official Washington, DC House.gov website to learn more and to see what issues/concerns her or she highlights as important.
Your assignment is to write THREE paragraph summary description of your member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Your discussion should include:
A brief biography of your member (i.e., education, previous work experience and political positions);
The political party of your member of the U.S. House;
The standing committee(s) he or she serves on in the U.S. Congress (“standing” committees are described in the textbook and lecture); and
What you think are your member’s legislative priorities (i.e., the issues he or she cares most about) based on your research.
