Group C: Infectious diseases have several causes, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. They are spread by various routes, including contact, droplet, airborne, and bodily fluids, and are very contagious, hence the name communicable diseases. These agents can also be described by their Infectivity, Pathogenicity, and Virulence (Bell, 2019). In the movie Contagion, they also used the term R nought (Ro). According to Guerra 2017 (Ro) is, “the average number of secondary cases of an infectious disease arising from a typical case in a totally susceptible population, and can be estimated in populations if pre-existing immunity can be accounted for in the calculation.” Contagion also referenced the Epidemiological Triangle, types of immunity, incubation period, route of transmission, fomites, and vectors. Starting in 1961, the CDC began monitoring and investigating outbreaks of diseases through the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS). It starts with information collection from hospitals, clinics, urgent cares, and laboratories when patients arrive and are diagnosed with a reportable disease. (A list of reportable diseases is included in the attachment). That information is sent to local public health departments and shared with the CDC. The sick are isolated, and the exposed, non-sick are quarantined. Guidelines may be implemented to reduce the spread of the disease based on its transmission (Droplet = surgical mask, Airborne = N95 mask, Contact = frequent handwashing, hand sanitizer, not touching your face, gloves, gowns).
It is factual now and not just a movie plot; public health, the CDC, or the WHO cannot prevent this kind of Epidemic or Pandemic from happening. Shutting down borders, restricting travel, and even having people stay home for months on end will not even stop Covid 19, let alone something similar to the MEV-1 virus in Contagion. Look at what China is going through today due to being in lockdown. Look at the RSV season we just had. Protect from one problem and cause another.
