Paragraph 1: Compose a paragraph describing the selection in terms of the elements of music. Select at least two elements that you feel you can make substantive statements about, based on what you are hearing. You can choose from any of the elements of music. Some you may consider are: rhythm (beat, tempo, meter, etc.), melody (motif, phrase, cadence, part, melodic motion), harmony (major/minor, consonant/dissonant, chord, etc.), dynamics, texture (mono-, poly-, homophonic). Be sure to include some explanation and show me you have developed some listening skills and are able to articulately describe what you are hearing.
Paragraph 2: Compose a paragraph describing the timbres and medium (solo, small group/chamber music, orchestra, choir, etc.) you believe the selection represents. Again, be sure to provide an explanation for your choice.
Paragraph 3: Compose a paragraph discussing the historic context, or style period you believe the selection represents (middle ages, renaissance, baroque). Include and explanation based on what you are hearing and what you know of the musical characteristics from each style period. Also, select a possible composer who you believe MIGHT have composed the selection. note: I’m not asking for you to tell me THE composer, but just someone who MAY have composed it. I want you to be able to identify composers associated with the same style period.
