Realistic Fiction Ideas
Think about the major dilemma in a book you’ve read. Change that dilemma to a related problem to focus your story. As an example, in Misty of Chincoteague, Paul and Maureen work to raise a filly born to a wild mare. A possible student narrative might involve the main character raising a litter of orphaned kittens.

Think about a problem facing you or someone you know. Imagine that a fictional character is dealing with this same problem. Brainstorm ways your character might tackle and solve this issue. As an example, perhaps a friend or relative is struggling to find work. make a character facing the same dilemma. Maybe the character opts for self-employment, growing a lucrative business.

Think of a single, small moment that you’ve experienced in the past. Maybe it’s a strong emotion, a person you care about said something, you went to a place that ended up being important to you. Now…blow that moment up! Make it huge. What’s the worst that could have happened because of that moment? What’s the best? Get weird with it (but keep it real).

Fantasy Ideas
Think about an injustice you see in our world, how might it be different if magic were involved? How would people react if those who experienced this injustice suddenly gained the power to right this injustice overnight? (E.g. People who are homeless suddenly gain the power to manifest buildings from scrap material in the environment)

Imagine an everyday problem that you might face, what would you do if there was a knock at the door and someone offered to take that problem away? What might the price of this exchange be and what unintended consequences might result from this change? (E.g. All dogs are suddenly trained to use human toilets. The excess waste causes untold damage to our sewers and pipes, not to mention the line for the bathroom in Starbucks goes into the street now)

What if, at birth, every person received something that would be with them their entire lives? What would this thing be? Would it be useful? Valuable? Could it be stolen? How would people cope with this thing and what lengths would they go to to protect it? (E.g. Everyone is born with an expiration date on their wrist, but it’s not necessarily the date they die…rather it’s the date they will lose the most important thing in the world to them).
