In the book of genesis, there are two accounts of creation that share some similarities as well as have some differences. For the most part the two accounts may seem similar, but there are key differences between the two on the order in which creation took place. In the Priestly version of the creation story God made plants and every other type of vegetation on the third creation day in preparation for the creation of mankind (Genesis 1, 9-12). However, in the J-E version of the creation story, there were no plants yet on earth until after God created man. He then planted a Garden in Eden and made to grow every plant that was good for food there.
Another dissimilarity between the two accounts is when the creation of the animals occurred. The priestly version states that birds were made on the fifth day of creation (Genesis 1, 20) while the beasts of the earth were created on the sixth day along with mankind. Contradicting this is the J-E account which states that God created the beasts of the field and every bird of the air at the same time while trying to find man an adequate helper (Genesis 2, 18-20)
In both creation accounts god is forming the earth in preparation for creating mankind. According to the accounts of the Priestly version, God spoke man into existence on the sixth day in the image of himself (Genesis 1, 26-27). He then gave mankind dominion over every living thing, as well as the right to eat from every tree with seed in its fruit. In the J-E version, God created man from dust and then breathed the breath of life into his nostrils (Genesis 2, 7) God then planted a Garden in Eden where he put the man.
In the creation story described by the Priestly writer, it seems as if God was creating everything in the universe to support the creation of mankind. He created trees with fruit for the man to eat and gave him superiority over every other living creature, not seeming to expect anything in return. In the account of the J-E writer, God seems to have made man to be a helper. He brought him to the Garden of Eden to till it and keep it (Genesis 2, 15), he then brought all the animals to him to be named (Genesis 2, 19-20). God also used man to help him in the creation of women by taking one of his ribs while he slept (Genesis 2, 21-22). The differences in the two versions may indicate that the writers have two different views on mankind’s relationships with God.
Between the two accounts the most inconsistent detail is the creation of women. The Priestly version states that God made man and women together at the same time by speaking them into existence (Genesis 1, 26-27). While the J-E version states that God first made women by causing a deep sleep to fall on the man at which point God took one of the mans ribs and made it into the first women (Genesis 2, 21-22). Based on the manner and timing of the creation of women in the J-E account, some may say that it implies that women were created for men to be a helper instead of being made as an equal counterpart based on good saying that he would make him a helper fit for him (Genesis 2, 18). Some may use this passage to justify social stereotypes on men being superior to women.
