As is the case with most writing, it is best to write about what you know. So a humorous aspect of your life often works out quite well for this assignment. For example–a humorous day in your life, a day at work, a day with your roommate, a day with your parents, a day of quarantine, etc. I’ll show you some examples in a minute.
But first, humor is a lot like love–if you over-analyze it, you ruin it. However, for purposes of understanding it a little better, let’s just say that the things we laugh at usually break down into three categories:
1. The unexpected. This is the most basic kind of humor. Even babies will laugh at the unexpected. Things such as a guy slipping on a banana peel or a person walking into a glass door because he thought it was open or a girl dropping her cell phone in the toilet. Ha ha ha.
2. The exaggerated. This includes taking real life and making it even sillier and more ridiculous than it already is. South Park is a good example of this.
3. The taboo. This, of course, means things we are not supposed to talk about or even think about. We laugh at the taboo because it makes us feel uncomfortable, and we would rather laugh than feel uneasy. South Park is a good example here too.
Your humor pieces should be at least 1000 words, typed, double-spaced, in MLA format. If you think that photos or illustrations will make your piece funnier, feel free to include them.
