STUDENT 1
Both social and human capital can play a role in providing resources and support to those who have been abused. Social capital refers to the networks of relationships and connections that an individual has, and can include things like family, friends, and community support systems. Human capital refers to the knowledge, skills, and abilities that an individual possesses.
Research suggests that social capital may have a greater influence over resources accessible to the abused. Studies have found that social support from family and friends can have a positive impact on mental health outcomes for those who have experienced abuse. Additionally, community-based resources and organizations, such as shelters and support groups, can provide practical assistance, such as housing and legal aid, that can be crucial for leaving an abusive situation.

“Social capital and human capital are two types of resources. The key difference between human capital and social capital is that human capital refers to skills, knowledge, experience, etc. possessed by different individuals whereas social capital refers to the resources we gain from being a social network.” (Hasa, 2017) When it comes to abuse, there is no population that is a target for abuse. It can happen with children, partners, elders and even with family. As far as what kind of abuse there are several kinds, such as verbal and physical.
Often when someone is abused, they either keep it to themselves or they isolate themselves from others. This is because they are embarrassed at what has happened, fear someone will not believe them, or they will make them shameful of the act that has occurred. “Isolation is also a significant factor in the difficulty of reporting elder abuse, as many abused elders have been removed from their homes and away from friends due to physical needs.” (Burkholder & Nash, 2013) Resources can also help with those that feel like they cannot remove themselves from a certain situation of abuse. I know of a situation where the woman in the abused relationship does not work or have means of any money on her own. She has 3 kids as well is fear of how she will be able to provide for them. Most of the time the person stays because they feel like there is no other option.
Increasing the awareness in social capital can help provide a lot of resources for those that need it. Whether it will be with resources of how to deal/cope with a traumatic event or be able to give them guidance on how to live with it moving forward in life. Most people who are abused often don’t know how to cope appropriately in life whether it would be with a partner or a family member.
