Good morning class!
It is not news to anybody that healthy nutrition and exercise are important factors in one’s development and life. Incorporating these factors into a child’s life can improve the way their body works, enhance physical performance, and influence their cognitive performance. To promote healthy growth and development, parents must be aware of proper nutrition and the use of exercise.
If I were to advise parents on the importance of proper nutrition and exercise, I would recommend that they look into nutritional guidelines that the CDC has set to provide healthy development. Dietary guidelines can give parents an idea of how much they should be feeding their child and how much is too much so that the child will not grow to become overweight. For many children, the problem is not that they do not have access to food but that their eating habits instead lead to obesity and being overweight. The eating habits that young children develop from their parents or caregivers are crucial to have healthy eating habits that children will mimic (Santrock et al., 2020).
Physical activity is an essential part of early childhood through late childhood. According to the CDC (2022), physical activity can reduce the risk of developing heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and obesity. Encouragement from parents and caregivers can significantly improve a child’s desire to stay physically active. My advice to a parent trying to keep exercise a part of their child’s life is to start young. When a parent encourages safe play, that can act as the foundation for an active lifestyle for the child. Taking children for walks or to the park will keep them active and allow for a healthy lifestyle rather than sitting in front of the television or playing video games. Encouragement can go a long way in these instances.
Proper nutrition and exercise promote healthy growth and development, like relationships between parents or caregivers and their children. When a child has a secure and safe attachment to their “person,” they are more likely to grow up and live healthier lives. When a parent has flexible expectations for a child, it leaves more room for opportunity and growth in the child’s life. Children need to be nurtured and feel emotionally and physically secure regarding their parental figures. This will lead to a healthier lifestyle, and the child is likelier to be healthy in other aspects of their lives, including emotional and mental health (Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit, 2019).
Cultural inequity or barrier that gets in the way of people receiving proper nutrition and exercise is poverty (Santrock et al., 2019). Research has shown that people who live in poverty have worse health due to a lack of healthcare and tend to have a poor diet compared to those who do not live in poverty. Neighborhoods with low-income families need more resources when it comes to promoting health. They lack grocery stores that provide them with affordable nutritious food, and also lack parks and recreation places that will encourage them to fulfill their bodies’ need for physical activities compared to neighborhoods of higher income. The reality is that junk food is cheaper and more easily accessible. Many low-income families qualify for government assistance programs to resolve this issue of purchasing food. There are also pantries that will help families struggling to buy food.
Although some families benefit from government assistance programs, knowing how to eat nutritionally is essential to a healthy lifestyle.
