This graph represents a sampling of studies looking at the effectiveness of therapy (irrespective of the type of therapy). In each study, individuals had been randomly assigned to the three groups. Keep in mind that the participants didn’t pick to not receive therapy, they were assigned to the 3 groups (blind study). Also, all participants were likely new to therapy, so didn’t know what to expect. The 3 groups are:
The Experimental group received “normal” weekly psychotherapy.
The Placebo group received weekly meetings but with no counseling techniques or interventions used. (Keep in mind that all participants were likely new to therapy.)
The Control group received no treatment or “meetings” at all.
