Lab 2: Measurements and Data Analysis
Objective: To understand, measurement, data, and error analysis.
A) Define accuracy and precision of measurement?
Write one example for each.
B) The best-known height of Mount Monadnock is 965m (from Google). When you measured the height of this mountain, by using some scientific equipment, you found different values:
(a) 950 m (b)1002 m (c) 980 m (D)961m (E) 972 m (F) 991m
Based on these six data, answer the following questions.
Write the significant figures of all these data.
iii) Calculate mean (or Average) value.
ii) Calculate Fractional Error and express in percentage.
iv)Calculate Deviation and Mean Deviation Values.
v) Calculate Standard Deviation. Follow following steps
Step 1: Find the mean.
Step 2: For each data point, find the square of its distance to the mean.
Step 3: Sum the values from Step 2.
Step 4: Divide by the number of data points -1 (n-1).
Step 5: Take the square root.
C) Using Microsoft Excel, plot a graph using the given data:
Use this link (https://www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/airplane/mofall.html) to get the data for distance (in Y-axis) vs. time (in x-axis).
When you opened this link, you will find a table of free fall starting at zero velocity (do not worry about the theory at this time, we will work on Chapters 2 and 3). For this lab, you going to use the first row for the time data (in seconds) and the last row for the distance (in meters) data.
Rewrite those data- time and distance in the table below:
Time (in seconds) Distance (in Meters)
0
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
Use the scatter plot (using Microsoft Excel) to get the graph distance vs. time and attach the graph.
What is the equation of the line of best fit for your graph (you can use trend linebest fit—-and display the equation in the scatter plot, graph, to get the best-fit equation)?
Using your equation, predict the distance of object in free fall at t=20 seconds and 30 seconds (we assume that the object starts falling freely from a sufficient height to travel 30 seconds before hitting the ground).

D) Conclusion (mainly discuss 4/5 lines -what did you learn from this lab?)
