Overview
The goal of this discussion is to demonstrate your understanding of how qualitative research differs from quantitative research and the advantages and disadvantages of using this approach. This is discussed in section 6.31 of your textbook Links to an external site..
Quantitative research involves the analysis of numerical data. Qualitative research is another method used, which involves the analysis of non-numerical data such as the analysis of themes. While quantitative research can tell us about who, what, and where, qualitative research is better suited to answering the how and whys of human behavior.
A name that has become big in qualitative research over the past few years is Brene Brown. Brene Brown has a PhD in social work and conducts research on topics such as joy, shame, courage, and vulnerability.

How does the research conducted by Brene Brown differ from quantitative research?
Professor Berne Brown does research. She has examined the relationship between shame and the dread of isolation in her qualitative study of vulnerability. Human emotions cannot be reduced to numbers using the quantitative way of graphing and tabulating; instead, they must be explored in-depth with the human spirit, as the other provides their story with the hope that they would benefit others (Brown, 2021). Her qualitative studies provide compelling evidence that many disadvantaged people are willing to relate their tales with an empathic ear and that it is possible to deduce, from these accounts, that human beings have a fundamental need to be seen as valued and valuable.
2. What qualitative techniques does she use?
She conducted in-depth interviews with many different people to get this knowledge. Interviews, focus groups, observations, case studies, first-hand experiences, and secondary sources like journals fall under qualitative research methodologies. She was now equipped with the data necessary to investigate the human condition. Mathematical and statistical data based on numbers are used in quantitative research to verify hypotheses and ideas, with findings displayed graphically and tabulated (Leighton, 2019).
3. What are some advantages and disadvantages of Brown's approach?
Her gathering technique does not include statistics; instead, she focuses on individuals' actual, day-to-day experiences and views these accounts as "data with a soul." She gathered all the facts examined in depth and produced her hypothesis by focusing on comparing attributes. She did not disclose her statistics for a decade since she also felt exposed and found it challenging to convey her feelings (TedTalk, 2020). She reached this conclusion after doing research based on real-life interviews and seeing that when individuals experience shame, they isolate themselves from society, making them vulnerable and lonely. To protect oneself from being weak, one must have the conviction that they are genuine and deserving of affection. It is necessary to have affection and feel worthy of living a pleasant and calm life. It was the information she got through speaking with many individuals and gathering the accounts of their actual lives.
