A life review is similar to a person’s life story. An autobiographical set of internalized life experiences spanning from childhood to older adulthood, and the shared emotions, opinions, and beliefs that shape an individual into who they are as a person. A life review helps to overcome unresolved conflicts by giving meaning to past experiences (Keisari & Palgi, 2017). The life review is a therapeutic approach for older adults to enhance their sense of integrity, appreciation, gratitude, versus feelings of guilt and remorse to promote psychological and subjective well-being (Keisari & Palgi, 2017). A life review can be used as an early intervention tool that can prevent depression late in life. Group therapy life review tends to be more beneficial than individual life review because new perspectives and interpretations can potentially alter an older adult’s perspective on a specific significant event, providing more clarity (Keisari & Palgi, 2017).
A life review is like an autobiographical memory, such as Life-crossroads, in which the life story is built consciously or unconsciously through the individual’s life span, has meaningful and influential decisions that carve into a life narrative, making up a person’s core identity (Keisari & Palgi, 2017). One study looked at a combined approach utilizing drama therapy and life review. Group participants get to explore subjective past experiences in the present tense by integrating reality and fantasy in a creative artistic realm (Keisari & Palgi, 2017). The therapeutic process of the life review has seven stages. Stage one, life crossroads stories allow the group participants to get acquainted, and write down five “crossroads” or significant events in their life story. Stage two is life crossroads on stage, in which the participants share and process their life crossroads stories. The story was then transferred to the stage like a vignette (Keisari & Palgi, 2017). Stage three is the dramatic roles are recognized and given a role. Stages four through seven allows the group to recognize and process the thought or actuality of adding a new life crossroad, such as learning a new skill, like learning to play the piano.
Theories of Aging
The theories discussing the aging process are divided into two groups: stochastic and non-stochastic. The stochastic group of theories discuss the breakdown of cellular components due to free radicals and molecular degradation. The non-stochastic theories discuss a more environmental influence during the aging process that leads to gene degradation (Trevisan et al., 2019). An example of a non-stochastic theory is chronic degeneration. All organs and tissues age at different rates based on the individual’s lifestyle. The more an organ or tissue gets used (except the brain), the faster it ages, such as the ligature knee makeup of a professional 30 year old football player versus a 30 year old mechanical engineer.
