5. Support delivered within a recovery framework is grounded in an understanding that people can continue to live a life of meaning alongside the experience of mental illness. Recovery approaches will differ depending upon the person’s choices but also where a person is on their recovery journey, for instance, if acutely unwell, the person may have a reduced capacity to make informed choices and involvement in their care and treatment plan may be limited. However, it is imperative that, as the person’s capacity increases, they are afforded the right to inform their care and treatment wherever possible.

a) Samantha has been admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Act as she is experiencing psychotic symptoms and there are concerns about her self-care. Since admission 3 days ago, she has not eaten anything as she believes she is being poisoned. On the third day, her daughter visits and brings in food. Samantha eats, saying she believes her daughter would never hurt her. Her daughter asks to visit for breakfast the next day before going to work so that her mother will eat again. The nurse tells her she cannot visit as this is outside visiting hours and that Samantha will just need to eat what the kitchen provides.

b) James lives in a private rental property with his girlfriend, Jodi, and works part time at the local grocery store. They have been in a relationship for two years and, despite both having a history of mental illness, they have been well since moving in together a year ago and their psychiatrist believes that this is attributed to the support they give each other. As James is on a depot injection, he continues to receive support from the Community Mental Health Team. When his worker visits to review his support plan, Jodi tells them that she has recently found out that she is pregnant, and she and James appear very excited about the baby. The worker asks Jodi if she has spoken to her doctor about her options and suggests that perhaps a baby is not a good idea for them.
