The driver of the car fled the scene and remains unidentified. The parking lot is located in front of the school’s primary building. The school had installed two video surveillance cameras covering the parking lot; however, these cameras stopped working in January of this year. In February the school hired a repair company to fix the cameras, but one of them stopped working again in May. No further repairs have been made. The camera nearest John at the time of the accident was working but was obstructed by an overgrown tree. The school does not employ or assign employees to monitor the parking lot at any time. One other student witnessed the accident but was unable to identify the driver. Gould Middle School is a public school in the Gould School District located within Los Angeles County, California.
