For this discussion we are choosing three events from U.S history that had we think had the largest impact on our labor relations systems, and explaining why we think this way. For my first pick, I chose the formation of the National Labor Union, or NLU. The NLU, founded in 1866 (Fossum, 2014), was the first national union in the U.S and although it only had a short run, the formation of this labor union, which included both skilled and unskilled laborers, proved that a national labor union could form and exist in the U.S.
For my second pick, I chose the adoption of the American plan by U.S employers, and act which would begin to associate unions and the power of collective bargaining with foreign agents and, with the inclusion of the Mohawk Valley formula, the dreaded communist agenda. These actions allowed employers to frame their anti-union views and actions, which largely stemmed from the effect of unions on their profits, as pro-American, anti-communist views and actions.
My last pick is another historical event that actively hindered union power, and that is the passing of the Labor Management Relations Act of 1947, or the Taft-Hartley Act. This act enabled states to enact right – to – work laws. On the surface, these laws forbid unions from forcing employees to join a union. While unions were already forbidden from forcing employees to join a union, the law also made it so that employees of a union worksite do not have to be a union member, and therefore pay union dues, even if they are receiving the benefits of union membership. This severely hindered the ability of unions to recruit members post 1947 and would lead to the gradual decline in union membership we still see to this day (Fossum, 2014
