As a society, how do you think we could decrease some of the disparities of the cancer statistics? How would you approach doing so? Would you begin at the local, state, national, international level, so bottom-up approach or top-down approach? Why? Give a brief proposal of where you would start and what you would do.
I think that education plays a large role in the disparities of cancer statistics. There’s a lot of information about risk factors, preventative measures, and screenings that should be done at specific times in your life to test for cancer. Many people do not know about these things. As an adult I did not know until I went into the medical field and learned about these things. The medical field itself has gotten better about getting this education out to their patients and having closed loop communication with them to make sure they acknowledge everything. I think the real issue is getting people in to get their regular check-ups so that this information can be passed on to them. Many people for a long time in their younger years feel almost invincible and don’t even feel the need to ever go to the doctor. Early education is key, so how do we get this information out to a young population that doesn’t want it? One way could be to incorporate this into a high school health education course during their senior year. Most of us go through a similar course, but at a younger age and it harps on sex ed. As a senior you are becoming a young adult and are about to venture into the big bad world on your own. It’s important to know certain things like how to balance your income and spending, how to do your taxes, the amount of bills you will face etc. Healthcare is one of those important subjects that we should be preparing these kids for. This would be the perfect opportunity to provide that education. Unfortunately, some countries and populations do not get a high school education and are not provided with the same level of medical care that is available in the U.S.
