Read the following ethnographic study in preparation for your discussion posting.

Focus on the role of observation utilized in this study. Also consider the dangers involved in collecting data in the natural setting. Could the researchers also benefit from using existing data in the form of agency records or official statistics? Why or why not?

Putting oneself at risk for the sake of science should be a personal choice, but seeking it nearly always necessitates the desire for a result, which may be damaging and render the research no longer genuine because the participant is in an observer position, (Winlow, 2001) almost encouraging it to happen. One of the difficulties this study encountered was being entirely disguised. The study recruited a former bouncer, which I think was an excellent choice because that guy could integrate well enough. Researchers gain from using existing data, such as agency records or official statistics. The official foundation of the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program by Congressional legislation facilitated its success in several ways. It facilitated the formation of standard definitions of specific crimes like murder, rape, robbery, and assault that cut across all of these states. Over 18,000 police departments partake in the program, making it the most credible source of local crime statistics in the country, (Nolan, 2002). Some challenges were being completely disguised. The researcher used a person who was formally a bouncer, I think this was a good idea because that person could blend in very well.

This was definitely an interesting study and it was a cool concept! I think it is great, in this situation, that the researcher had a background in the field he was observing because it gave him a little more insight on what to realistically expect. Because this study is being done in a natural setting it is considered a high danger situation because of the nature of the job. Bouncers are typically larger men who are ready to intimidate and handle violent situations that arise. 

In this study the mode of observation that the researcher used was comprehensive perspective. This allowed the researcher to study and observe the situation as closely and completely as he could. In this situation of studying bouncers it allowed for the researcher to be up close and personal in his studies which then allowed for more effective understanding of the situation. I think that this was effective because it creates more validity for the researcher because his information is coming first hand rather than from a report previously written by someone else. The researcher could use existing data to assist in their study but I do not feel that it is overly necessary because he will be receiving a lot of the information he needs from his personal studies. Because of the nature of the study there was quite a few challenges especially around safety concerns because of how violent situations can become but they addressed those by ensuring they had someone on the team who was able and willing to deal with those situations. This was overall a successful study (Maxfield, 2015).
