Presentation #3 Conflict Management
Purpose: The goal of this presentation is to explore how your couple moves through Knapp’s stages 6-10 and handles conflict by analyzing their choices and strategies through the use of the tools discussed through lecture, and video, as well as materials discussed in this portion of the unit.
Note: While the rubric shows a variety of categories that should be addressed in this presentation, please understand that you do not need to address the rubric issues in order. Rather, weave in the issues in an order and manner that makes sense to the story you are telling.
Items to cover in the presentation.
This will vary depending on how successful or unsuccessful your couple is in managing conflict. And this can be done in a variety of ways.
One way to approach this presentation is to select one conflict your couple has and use that conflict as THE example to analyze. If you choose this mode, you should:
Identify reasons this relationship is struggling (what is causing it to fall a part).
How does the couple/group manage this crisis? What is the effect of that on the relationship?
Deal with conflict styles:
1. Identify which conflict style each person uses (for instance, is person A an accommodator? How do we know this? What do they do or say that supports that conclusion? How does this style of conflict management affect the relationship?).
2. How do the two conflict styles work together? Do they cause conflict to escalate or de-escalate?
3. Would you classify this as constructive or destructive conflict?
4. How do they use conflict to strengthen their relationship? (or if not, how does conflict weaken their relationship?).
Deal with management styles:
1. What strategies do they use? Do they use the 6 step model? AEIOU? The 4 questions? etc. (there are other strategies in your book as well).
2. If they don’t use constructive strategies, perhaps they use destructive strategies–which are covered in part in the 5 conflict styles already discussed, but may also be covered in the last of our readings.
Deal with Knapp’s coming apart stages:
1. Do they get to any of those coming apart stages? If not, why not? What is it about the relationship that keeps that from happening? If they do get to those stages, which stages and why? Do they ever come back from those stages? Why and how? (This would be a good place to work in reasons relationships come apart
The second option is to not focus on a single conflict event– which is more possible for some of you than others– and choose to look at how the relationship handles conflict in general– you will still want to do the things above, but do it through a lens that encompasses the whole relationship and trends in the whole relationship rather than looking specifically at one conflict incident. If so, please also focus on the constructive or destructive patterns the couple might use.
MY PAPER THAT I NEED HELP WITH IS BELOW
A Walk to Remember
Movies are an excellent medium through which one may communicate how they feel about a certain topic or even an individual. Examples of genres that are wonderful at expressing how a person really feels for another person include dramas and romances as well as romantic comedy. A Walk to Remember, which was adapted from a novel written by Nicholas Sparks, is one of my favorite movies because it shows that love does exist and that it has the power to alter a person’s life in indelible ways. A Walk to Remember demonstrates that falling in love can happen to anybody at any time, even when they are not looking for it, and that it is an experience that cannot be denied.
Because love is something that is difficult to obtain, discovering it in one’s teenage years is something that is really unique and remarkable. In most cases, the discovery of who you are and what you are meant to be in life takes place during your time spent in high school. In the movie “A Walk to Remember,” this is what ended up happening to the characters Jamie Sullivan and Landon Cater. Landon is wasting his time and getting nowhere quickly, and it isn’t until he begins spending a lot of time with Jamie that he realizes he’s not accomplishing anything with his own life that he understands he’s wasting his time. Because Jamie has trust in him, he is able to do everything he puts his mind to doing, which he does not discover what it is like to actually love someone until he meets Jamie. He is also able to achieve anything he sets his mind to doing because Jamie has faith in him.
One of the first things that Jamie says to Landon at the very beginning of the film is that she demands that he make a vow to himself that he will not fall in love with her. In an excerpt from the film A Walk to Remember, Jamie can be heard saying that she does not want Landon to develop romantic feelings for her; but, as the plot of the film unfolds, you are able to see how Jamie and Landon’s connection develops. In the moment in which Jamie says, “You have to promise not to fall in love with me,” Jamie’s character is caught off guard by the fact that Landon Carter seeks her for assistance. “You have to pledge not to fall in love with me.” She is baffled as to why he would seek her for assistance with his lines when he could have requested for assistance from any other student at the school. However, as the scenario continues, you come to understand that all Landon wants from her is for her to assist him with running lines together for the school play. The camera spends much of its time in this scene concentrating on Jamie and Landon, and not as much on the other students at the school; yet, what the camera is really telling us is the beginning of the connection between Landon and Jamie. I am aware of the fact that Jamie does not want to develop romantic feelings for Jamie’s, but the fact that she does not wish to do so does not imply that she will not. In the latter parts of the movie, as Landon is taking Jamie out on their first date, Landon confesses his love to Jamie. Jamie relays the message to Landon that she warned him not to develop romantic feelings for her. This section focuses a lot on how Landon’s character has developed from when he was this huge bad ass in school to when he is now a guy who loves someone with all of his heart and is prepared to do everything and everything to protect them. In this particular moment, the camera perspective places a strong emphasis on Landon’s character, demonstrating to the spectator that he really loves Jamie for who she is and is prepared to sacrifice everything for the opportunity to be with her. These scenes from A Walk to Remember opened my eyes to the significance of genuine love, and they also made me realize that you can never know someone on a deep level until you spend quality time with them, because your impression of a person can shift drastically depending on the amount of time you spend with them, and this can have a significant impact on how you feel about them.
You might have a better sense of how powerful love can be as it develops more. This also holds true for a great number of other things. One particular aspect that stands out in my mind is the perspective that filmmakers bring to the movies that they produce. They have such a strong emotional connection to it, and they want for others to feel the same level of appreciation for their movie as they do. Sandhu Sukhdev’s essay “Film as an Act of Love” is an example of an article that provides support for this notion. Sukhdev emphasizes the significance of love in his films because it reveals how individuals feel about one another, demonstrates what genuine love entails, and provides an outlet for individuals to express how they feel about one another. The concept that “the film may be a representation of a director’s individuality and personal vision,”(44) as stated by Sukhdev, is an interesting one. The point that Sukhdev is attempting to make with this statement is that cinema is another means to express oneself, and that by doing so, it enables you to communicate how your genuine feelings are regarding anything or someone else. Due to the fact that his father abandoned him and his mother when Landon was a child, he finds it difficult to be successful in this endeavor. He is not going to place all of his faith in someone who is simply going to up and leave him behind without any explanation. However, while he is with Jamie, he realizes that it takes time for a person who has abandoned you to develop the trust that they once had for you. Despite the fact that Landon learns this very fast and is aware that Jamie will always be there for him, whatever the situation may be. This is not the only individual that figures out what Landon is trying to teach them, despite what Sukhdev may think. Jamie does as well. The character of Jamie is one that is reserved and speaks for herself. Because she is constantly evaluated by the other students at her school, she tends to stay to herself. Jamie begins to come out of her shell as she and Landon begin spending time together; yet, there is still something that is preventing her from expressing the complete truth about herself, which is something that only her father is aware of. Even though she is unwell, she is unable to be herself until she confides in Landon that she has leukemia. After that, she is free to be herself. When Landon finds out that Jamie is unwell, he does not treat her any differently. Instead, he makes it a priority to spend as much time is possible with her and to do everything that is on her bucket list.
Love creates a powerful connection between two individuals that ought not to be severed. In current day and age, this phrase is not accurate since there are a significant number of marriages that result in divorce; yet, love is a strong bond that is not lost with time. Torben Grodal’s essay “Love in a Film Desire” presents a novel perspective on the themes of romantic love and sexual attraction that are prevalent in cinema. He
draws parallels between it and pornography. When I was looking at this article for the first time, I was a bit hesitant about what I was about to read, but after I began reading it, I was able to understand why Grodal compares love and desire in movies to pornography. This is due to the fact that both of these explanations describe how they remove a significant number of feelings that individuals use to convey how they feel about another person. Because they communicate not just how you feel about a person but also how that person feels about you, wholesome emotions, and notably love, are essential to the success of a romantic partnership. Love is the most important of them. One of the topics that Grodal addresses in his paper is the way in which.
The bond of love should never be severed. He says that although while there are many possible explanations for why we fall in love with a particular person, the fundamental characteristic of’real love’ is that the connection is unbreakable (Grodal 29). The idea behind this adage is that once you recognize that you are in love with someone, you shouldn’t risk losing that connection. This assertion is supported by several pieces of evidence, one of which being the film A Walk to Remember. The tape that I uncovered demonstrates that Landon’s emotions for Jamie begin to shift in a significant way when Jamie asks Landon to vow that he would not fall in love with her. This is due to the fact that he would never have thought, even in his wildest fantasies, that Jamie Sullivan would tell him anything like this. But the more time he spends with her, the stronger his emotions for her become, and the fact that he is not only ready to defend her in front of his other friends, but that he is also eager to do whatever to make her happy is all that a lady should ever ask for in a guy. When I watch this movie, I can’t help but wonder what kind of love life I will have in the future and whether I will ever meet someone with whom I can share my life the way Landon and Jamie do. Even after Jamie’s passing, their love has developed into an unbreakable link that cannot be severed. Landon says at the very end of the film that ” their love is like the wind,” and that ” he can’t see it, but he can feel it.” One thing to note about the connection between Landon and Jamie is that it is not only a physical relationship. Before he met Jamie, Landon was in relationships for the sake of having sexual encounters, but when he meets Jamie, he understands that there is more to romantic partnerships than simply sexual encounters. You can tell that Jamie places a greater emphasis on the emotional connection in relationships than she does on sexual encounters because of how she acts throughout the film. In addition to the fact that she is a Christian, since this was the lesson she learned from her parents while she was growing up, she believes this to be true. I believe that this is a characteristic worth appreciating, and I have high hopes that others will feel the same way.
In my opinion, the medium of cinema may be considered a form of language, particularly in situations when it is necessary to communicate an essential message. For instance, when Landon tells Jamie that his love for her is like the wind, and even though he can’t see it, he knows that their love will always be there regardless of what happens to them, he uses this analogy. This demonstrates that love does not end, and that it will continue to exist no matter what happens to the person you have dedicated your life to loving. You are able to comprehend, thanks to the essay “Cinema is a Language” written by Edward Hudlin, that film is only another means by which you are able to communicate yourself in a manner that words are unable to adequately convey. Nicholas Sparks did not just come up with the idea for this narrative out of thin air. He composed it since his sister was going through treatment for cancer at the time. He wrote this book in order to demonstrate to her that regardless of what transpired with her, she would not be forgotten with the assistance of this book. “one might think that a reader would receive nearly as much knowledge from reading a film screenplay as he would from seeing the picture that is based on it,” is how Hudlin explains the language of cinema (46). The point that Hudlin is trying to make here is that seeing the movie itself should provide you with the same amount of pleasure, if not more, than reading the screenplay or even the novel upon which the film is based. Because you really get to experience how Landon falls in love with Jamie, reading the book “A Walk to Remember” did not provide me with the same level of enjoyment that seeing the movie version of the story did. You don’t have to try to imagine how they shared their first kiss; instead, you get to see it unfold right in front of you on the screen as it happens. The portrayal of Landon’s character is quite different in the film compared to how he was written about in the novel. In the novel, Landon was more of a decent man than his buddies, who were the kind of people who would get into trouble and things like that. However, in the movie, Landon was just as much of a troublemaker as his friends were. And this was one of the qualities that I like about Landon, as it allowed me to see a bigger change as Jamie began to alter his life into something that was going to make him a person who was going to make a difference in this world. Both the movie and the book based on A Walk to Remember talk on how important it is to write down how you feel because if you don’t tell other people how you feel or write it down yourself, then you will never know what other people are saying to you until you tell them yourself.
A Walk to Remember is one of the movies that has a special place in my heart. These video, which I’ve chosen, help demonstrate that love is actually there for everyone, and that by going through the process of finding it, we may be able to discover ourselves and figure out who we are meant to be in this life. You will have a deeper understanding of the concept that love is a feeling that should never be severed if you read all of these articles. As you watch this tape, you are able to comprehend how much Landon feels for Jamie, and that he is prepared to spend as much time it takes to demonstrate that love is something that is worth fighting for, so that its link is not destroyed. Landon demonstrates this to us.
