As artists and photographers, we find inspiration from a variety of different things – life experiences, people we know, things occurring in the world; the list goes on and on. And while we are often inspired by the work of other artists and photographers, it is so important to practice drawing inspiration from a combination of both the work of others and from our own lives.
Sometimes, one of the best ways to figure out what our interests are and what inspires us as artists is to take some time to reflect and write or speak about our lives, our interests, and our inspirations. This is exactly what you’re going to tackle in this lab!
Throughout the course, suggestions or parameters for work have been made; the purpose behind this assignment is for you to begin to identify the direction you’d like to see your own photography go and what types of projects you’re most interested in. Ultimately, you’ll create a blog post or a podcast episode sharing your interests and inspirations, but before you can do that, you need to figure out what those interests and inspirations are!
Step 1
Start by going online and doing some research into what types of things or experiences often act as inspiration for artists and creative people. Let the research be guided by what you are drawn to, what resonates with you, and what you feel a connection to. Perhaps there is a photographer whose work speaks to you or whose use of materials and photographic methods particularly serves as an inspiration. Maybe there is a cause that you have a vested interest in that you’d like to further through your own photography.
Start formulating a list (very informal) of various things, people, places, experiences, or anything else that interests you and could serve as inspiration for your photography.
Next, take some time to elaborate on the items on this list, making notes about why each item interests or inspires you and noting any other relevant information. Consider the types of materials you would like to use to bring items on this list to life, any specific photography methods that you have already used during this course, and/or any other relevant information that will round out your list.
Step 2
After you feel that you have created a robust list of interests and inspirations, you will choose to either write something that could be posted on a blog or record something that could be used on a podcast episode. Both of these situations are hypothetical as you will not actually be posting this writing piece or publishing this podcast. Both options should be composed informally, meaning that your writing should be narrative style and your audio recording should be conversational and free flowing. In terms of length, if you choose to do a blog post, it should be 1-3 pages and if you choose to do an audio recording, it should be anywhere from 5-10 minutes.
Regardless of whether you decide to write or speak, you will simply be having a conversation about what inspires you, what interests you, and what materials and methods you are interested in experimenting with during your future photography endeavors.
Make sure to include a list of websites and resources that you used in your research and refer to the rubric below for more information on how you will be graded.
