Anyone from any origin or culture who lives in the United States and participates in American culture is considered to be an American. America is a melting pot of various cultures and experiences, which is what makes it so great. Regardless of age or political stance, everyone has access to a wide range of options. America is like a narcotic that most people can’t have but that everyone desires. Although it is a country with many opportunities, it also has its issues. My relationship with America has been erratic. I have encountered both good and unpleasant. I could speak proper English when I initially arrived in America. I was moved to a private school. Because of how diverse the school was, I had no problems there. Since I believed I spoke English fluently, I did not see the need to practice. However, I spent a lot of that time moving around and was frequently found upstate or in different sections of New York. I have seen firsthand how cruel people can be and how black Americans would make fun of you if your accent is too thick. Some educators might not want to assist you and might place you in a special education class. I would tell my mother that no one genuinely wanted to assist me. She would only state that Americans only think about themselves. Only Caribbean folks were able to provide me with genuine assistance. When I entered middle school, I had to restart everything. I had no friends because I was “the new kid.” I would always be the last person chosen for teams, and I would always be left out. I was almost never the first person invited to events. I had always felt alienated. I did not, however, let that deter me. I had no doubts about my ability to excel as I started my first year of high school. I intended to excel academically and establish my reputation. I began adhering to the strategy I had created for myself when I was younger and I kept with it. I’ve had success with it thus far. But I had no pals when I switched to a new school. Once more, I was the new kid. Once more, I was the outsider. I was the one who was never included. I was the one who was never selected first for teams. I was the one that was consistently invited to gatherings last. But I refused to let that deter me. I had the attitude that I would be successful heading into my sophomore year. I intended to excel academically and establish my reputation. The lack of friends I had did not stop me from achieving success. I’m a junior now, and I still have no friends. That doesn’t bother me because I am confident in my ability to succeed following my senior year. I’ll be attending Harvard, but I find it terrible that these individuals are less kind and frequently lack independent thought. For instance, if one individual takes action, the others must follow. If you don’t, people will think you’re strange. America, in my opinion, is a zombie state. Only a few of the zombies will try to assist you and bring you up. They will be your friend, never speak to you twice, and believe they know everything about you. Non-Americans believe that everything in America is twenty20 times better than it is back home. But, aside from the opportunities, America isn’t much. I understand that many countries do not have as much freedom as the United States, but even in America, people who are supposed to help and support one another will dig someone else’s grave and place them in it to make themselves look better than the other or better than someone else. Another reason I don’t trust anyone is that you never know who is working against you. The United States is overpriced. I’m surprised that breathing in fresh air is free but it’s only because God keeps me alive. Without him, I would have had to pay over 20,000 just to be able to breathe. Being an American, I believe, means not being yourself. To constantly be fighting for something. To constantly disagree with someone. To be wealthy and the desire to be or feel the smartest. To desire that someone loves you as much as you love them.
