This week I decided to revisit Knives Out to prepare for Glass Onion coming out in the following weeks. I forgot how good this film is and plays perfectly in satirizing culture at the time. From Jacob Thrombey being hinted at as an online troll who disagrees with people politically to start friction online and calling his sister an SJW Warrior to just the general saturation of the rich and how they are willing to kill and throw each other under the bus for the inheritance to work there way up in a world they themselves do not how to work through since they have been giving everything, they could need (tuition or a loan to start a company, etc.). This movie is really profound to me in the age of the superhero which is shown in the book with this quote “The success of the Spider-Man franchise for Sony Pictures set in motion one of modern Hollywood’s biggest success stories, the expertly diversified and synergized Marvel Cinematic Universe and its subsidiary Marvel Studios: and no murder mysteries coming out we got one of the greatest murder mysteries ever. I feel the killer even before the movie came out was obvious but the entire film was a ride that did not stop. I am not sure how this plays into a cinema at the time because it was kind of out of the blue Rian had been making Sci-Fi films like crazy and randomly decided to make a murder mystery it really did not make sense but it appreciated all the same. Surprisingly this film has influenced films coming out afterward. See how they run, confess fletch and a number of other meta-murder mysteries came out following. This is surprising and shows the influence of Knives Out as it usually takes a slow burn of films for a trend in the film to start as I have learned from this class.
