Elsa and Carla are taking a long trip together through the countries of the Southern Cone, but each one is experiencing it in a very different way.

Read the messages that have been sent to two friends (one in the third week of travel and the other in the seventh)

Write  email to one of them and say if your ideal vacation matches more with what Elsa likes or more with what Carla likes

Include more information about the type of tourism you prefer, and explain the implications and consequences of tourism with which you disagree

Express your opinion, interests, for example what should be visited in the Southern Cone and explain why

Subject: Whoops!

Dear Bea:

How are you?

Me here… looking forward to coming home. We have been traveling through the Southern Cone for three weeks and I am already a little tired. We started with Tierra del Fuego, in Argentina, but the truth is that I didn’t like it at all… what a sad place! Cold, gray… and lonely. Then we went up to the province of Santa Cruz and went to see the Perito Moreno glacier. Is awesome! Do you know what a glacier is? Well, it’s a frozen river… all ice… huge… Imagine an endless block of ice that moves sooooo slowly and breaks into large pieces when it reaches the lake.

From there we took a plane to Bariloche, much further north, next to the Andes. I liked it a lot more, but it’s not anything special either. It looks like the little towns in Tyrol… come on, one expects something else from South America, right? Of course: they make some wonderful jams, and the deer are so beautiful…

Then we cross into Chile. I don’t understand Carla: she liked the Andes crossing! She’s crazy, crazy crazy. I still get dizzy when I remember the road… and the cold… brrrrr… We traveled through Chile to San Pedro de Atacama, in the north of the country. The truth is that the capital, Santiago, did not impress me, but Valparaíso and Viña del Mar are incredible. I wanted to stay a few days, but Carla insisted on continuing the trip… It seems that if there is no solitude, dirt and bugs, she is not happy. Imagine that all that rush was to go to the Atacama! A desertoooo! Would you, in your right mind, go to a place called “Valley of Death”? Well Carla yes, and so happy.

Now I am writing to you from La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. At least there’s some movement here and I’ve found a cybercafé. I miss Madrid, I don’t know why I agreed to accompany Carla on this trip. But I have already given him an ultimatum: either we go to Oruro or I return to Madrid on the first plane. The day after tomorrow the carnival begins and I will not miss it. Well, I think I’ve vented a bit now. Forgive my bad mood, but I can’t wait to go home. By the way, how about you? How are you doing at the new job? You’ll tell me, okay?

Subject: News from the South

What’s up, Aitor? How’s it going?

I guess you’re back from vacation, right? We have three days left. I’m almost glad this is finally over. I can not stand it anymore. Elsa has spent the whole trip complaining and she has ruined the best for me. Can you believe that she has not liked Tierra del Fuego, or Bariloche, or the Andes? If there are no people and many shops, the lady is not happy. But she doesn’t just complain, no. The one you neglect, she is already buying something. In Bariloche she bought tons of jams and chocolates, and in Chile, she gave her basketry. She’s going to fill the house with her nonsense! At least they don’t weigh much… (I’m eating the jams, so I don’t have to carry them around. Ha ha)

We have also been to Bolivia. Elsa wanted to go see the Oruro carnival and she bought a huge mask of many colors, with horns and bulging eyes (she represents a devil or something like that). Well, the fact is that it is horrible and that we have been carrying the damned mask around for almost a month. And the worst thing is that, with so much carnival, in the end I was left without seeing Lake Titicaca. With the illusion that made me…

From Bolivia we went to Paraguay. It is amazing to see nature in all its splendor! She Thought there couldn’t be that many shades of green! And Elsa’s hysterics, protesting about the mosquitoes… But don’t believe, that she also dedicated herself to buying and buying there (I think we already have more than twenty kilos of excess baggage…).

Now we are in Buenos Aires. This city is chaos. Imagine three Madrid together. And with a heat, and humidity… Not to mention the noise and pollution. I liked the parks (there are many and they are very big), but the rest seems horrible to me: very tall and gray buildings, and cars everywhere. And the worst of all is that Elsa is delighted and she says that she would like to live here. She has dragged me shopping everywhere, we have visited a thousand museums and exhibitions and we have gone every night to see shows. The only thing I liked was the visit to a ranch (a country house). La Pampa is really impressive, it looks like a green sea and there are huge trees, which are not really trees but grass, called ombúes.

 Well, now I have to leave you because Elsa is waiting for me at the door of the internet cafe with the tickets for a concert in her hand… What a roll. Luckily, in three days we return home… I hope your holidays have been better.
