The movie I decided to watch for this assignment is Disney’s Aladdin. I have not seen this movie since childhood, but I remember it having my absolute favorite songs, sequences, and characters out of all the Disney movies. I was motivated to confirm if I still hold this opinion and to also see what my nephew thinks of the movie is an age when I first watched it and turns out we both loved it as much as the first time we saw it. Aladdin reminded me of when Jon Lewis talked about how American films were mostly “upper-class white American Protestants”. Lewis mentioned “The ethnic-religious divide was hardly a small thing at the time.” The story of Aladdin and the characters are based in Arabia and movies like Aladdin where the central characters are not white are important as movies today can explore many different cultures and places besides Americans. There are a lot of strengths to this movie, the main point being the animation and music which I believe is what the filmmakers were focusing on the most, it is a Disney movie and has some of the most stellar 2D animation to be seen at the time and counting today. The voice performances of all other actors and songs like “A Whole New World” and “Friend Like Me” are iconic and are among the top songs by Disney still today. I feel like Disney in my opinion fails to capture the same magic in their recent films as the ones they made in the 90s with Aladdin being a high example. I believe the film succeeds in telling a fantasy tale with audiences appreciating all the characters and wanting them to succeed. The plot itself is also a lot of pf fun with a villain who can be very haunting while also being sneakily hilarious. If any classmates are a fan of animated movies and are stuck on the current Disney movies, Aladdin is a high recommend.
