I would like to tell you a little bit about myself first. My name’s Alexa Zoila Leyva Vilches I was born in Cuba and at the age of nine, I migrated to The United States Of America. Having to migrate to a different country has enriched me with knowledge of learning a new language and new ways. Adaptability was one of the greatest challenges, mostly the language barrier and building relationships. Nonetheless, moving countries has served me in gaining knowledge of a different culture and its traditions.
Moving to a whole new country that spoke a different language or as my nine-year-old self used to describe it ‘Raro” (Weird) was one of the greatest challenges I faced. Not being able to have the same opportunities as other kids or the same treatment in school made me unmotivated to attend. My mental health suffered a lot as I was separated from my family and friends and placed somewhere where everything was so distinct. Being the “different” one made me feel like an outcast triggering my confidence. During Elementary school I was bullied mainly because of the language barrier “sad times”, an experience that I held on till High school. Tired of feeling less and developing goals and motivation made me break the barrier of failure and focus on reaching my best potential. As time passed I focused on my grades and my notes reflected on such.
Being able to be the Class President in my junior year of High school made me realize that ” I can do everything I set my mind to”. Gaining such a role helped me with my leadership skills and confidence in speaking to an audience. The experience made me grow and inspired me for the better.
In my extracurricular activities, The Club that I created called ” Hands Of Heart ” on Instagram which focuses on bringing awareness to the Immigrant community allowed me to learn more about the “immigrant life”. I have concluded that I take so many things for granted. Wanting to be an advocate for the immigrant community I have volunteered at the Wesley House Community service where I taught ESL to immigrant students. Being bilingual has enriched my way into society, a tool that helps me double my friendship and ability to communicate with others.
It would be an honor for me to share my abilities and provide my hard work to the Community at The University of Kentucky. I would like to be a part of a diverse community that focuses on building the foundation of its students for achievements later in life. Thank you again for your time, and I hope I get back with positive results.
Thank you,
Alexa Leyva Vilches
