The Hollywood grading system and America’s puritan roots, in my opinion, are two particularly noteworthy subjects we learned about in American cinema. I’ve always known that Puritans fled persecution in Europe and came to America, but I never made the connection between how the Puritan populace established a puritan culture. It’s funny that our beginnings are morally upright because I’ve never thought of America as particularly morally upright. The early modules were my least favorite. Despite my appreciation for the overall contributions made by silent-era movies, I find most of them need help to watch. Also, D.W. always appears in early film history. Griffith, who I have a vendetta against forever. It is true that his movie Birth of a Nation was the sole factor in the KKK’s revival. The transfer of the movie business from New York to Hollywood was also covered in greater detail in the textbook. I had no idea that while the studios’ commercial operations remained in New York, the productions had relocated to California. The power dynamics between the studio executives and the movie producers were interesting as a result of this distance.
I believe this course has really improved my knowledge of how history is depicted in popular culture. The major reason is that I thought it was fascinating how, throughout the 1930s and 1940s, when the war was still going on, movies either acted as pro-war propaganda or were opposed to it by highlighting the suffering caused by war. For instance, Casablanca demonstrated how relationships were ripped apart and how anxiously inducing that desperation was for individuals as they tried to flee Nazi persecution and occupation. However, whether or not the globe is at war, Hollywood’s war agenda has not altered and is highly paradoxical. War movies made now serve as reminders of America’s glory days or how dreadful war is for new generations. I think that the American film business will certainly experience a significant technological breakthrough in the next decades. similar to how it was after 1963.
