Detective’s Report The body outside the shack was initially found by a hiker. The body was badly decomposed and had probably been behind the shack for more than a month. The body was covered in leaves, but the red color of the deceased’s coat could be seen through the leaves. The hiker noticed the red cloth and then discovered the remains. Because of decomposition, no cause of death could be determined. The body was largely untouched by wild animals. The coat contained a passport, a package of cigarettes, $20 in US currency, and a slip of paper on which was written "8:30 Andrews". Under his coat, the deceased was wearing a collared button-down shirt, blue jeans, brown loafers, and black socks. A passport in the coat revealed the deceased to be Dimitri Petrikov, a 39-year-old Russian citizen known to be in the US on an expired tourist visa. No record of a Missing Person’s report was found. Petrikov’s name was found on a hotel registry at a hotel approximately 5 miles from the shack. The hotel stay probably occurred one week before his death. The hotel clerk said that he paid in cash. She also mentioned that, after paying his bill, he left in a car with a middle-aged man and a younger woman. She said that she remembered this because she thought it odd that Petrikov did not have any luggage. Making Inferences The detective is unsure as to whether there is enough evidence to continue to investigate the death. Offer two possible interpretations as to what happened at the cabin leading up to the time of death. Make sure each story is supported by crime scene evidence.
