1. Can you feel nature’s power in Turner’s depiction of the sea? What techniques does Turner use to convey that power? Homer advised young artists to look to nature for their inspiration. How does this painting differ from the Turner seascape in Figure 15.3? How does that difference impact the power and meaningfulness of the image?
2. How have the U.S. and other countries applied the Manifest Destiny attitude in the world? Is this kind of idea of civilization still applicable in light of current environmental crises today?

Question: Do you or someone you know exhibit some form of naturalistic intelligence? How does it manifest itself? How could this type of intelligence would be put to good use in the world?
4. Compare the Romantics’ attitude toward nature with the practices that developed in the twentieth century. Discuss whether their views on nature have been more harmful or helpful toward environmental causes.
5. Discuss why you think some Native American nations, once with strong natural bonds, now operate gambling casinos, and luxury hotels?
6. Compare and contrast the way nature is used in Native-American arts, in site-specific and environmental art. Include specific examples to support your points.
7. Do you think climate change can be reversed? Or would we be better off spending our energies trying to find new ways to accommodate to these changes?
8. If the ideas in the “More Than an Inconvenience” documentary are correct, environmental changes may cause people to make sacrifices and work together. In your view, what kinds of “conveniences” would people willingly sacrifice? What kinds would people be likely to give up only if they are forced to? Explain your stance.
