Topic: Light Naturalism: Matt’s phone flashed a notification: "You have 5% battery power remaining. Consider charging your phone." Matt couldn’t help but smile at the cheek; as if he wouldn’t charge his phone if he were anywhere near a charger. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much in the way of electricity at the bottom of a mine shaft. Still, it could be worse. He wasn’t in serious pain, and wasn’t seriously injured. He’d just dropped his flashlight into the chasm below and couldn’t find his way back. Other than the existential dread of dying alone in the dark, everything was peachy keen. Matt managed to swallow his desperation briefly, and began considering his options. He had 5% left; he could either try to call someone or use the flashlight on his phone to guide him back to the cave’s entrance. Neither option sounded particularly appealing; he was deep underground, and too far from the mouth of the cave to make it before the light died for good. For the thousandth time, he kicked himself for not having charged his phone, or told anyone where he was going, or brought along his friend who had actually wanted to come with him. Had he really been so cocksure as to think he wouldn’t run into trouble out in the middle of nowhere? He’d heard other people talk about misadventures like this, but he was better than them, right? Matt’s phone went from 5% to 4%, and he knew he had to make a choice now. This story is an example of Naturalism because it pits its protagonist against the elements in a person vs nature conflict. It is also pessimistic in tone, which is a common hallmark of Naturalism. Finally, the character is faced with a force beyond his control (time and darkness) which seem sure to defeat him.
