The involvement of the CIA in the assassination of John F. Kennedy and its impact on society
John F. Kennedy, commonly referred to as “JFK,” served as president of the United States from 1961 to 1963. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy was killed in Dallas, Texas. When John F. Kennedy was murdered, many people wanted to know why. This was by far the most common question. The assassination of John F. Kennedy marked a watershed moment for Americans and people all across the world. Assassination of John F Kennedy raised many questions not only about his death but, also about CIA and the government of the United State. Many conspiracy theories began to form after JFK’s assassination, speculating on the motivations and identities of those responsible. There is widespread speculation that the CIA was involved in his murder. The CIA stands for Central Intelligence Agency and they collect and analyze foreign intelligence and conduct covert action. The conspiracy theory that the CIA was involved in the assassination of John F. Kennedy and all the evidence supporting this conspiracy theory caused the public to question the functioning of the CIA and the government.
For a long time, the CIA stalled on releasing records related to the assassination of John F. Kennedy, leading many to doubt whether or not they were doing their work correctly. In November 2013, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (JFK) passed, yet the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) still refuses to declassify several papers connected to important events during his presidency ( Barrett, 2016). If the CIA were not covering something up, there would be no other explanation for why they would keep these materials after all these years. If they are going to conceal this information, there must be a significant purpose for doing so. Barrett (2016) stated that the one post-JFK-assassination document whose full release I’ve been trying to get has declassified parts that show legislators asking Dulles’s successor as DCI, John McCone, about Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby. However, the six-and-a-half pages that follow, which presumably describe McCone’s answers, are still classified. This begs the question, what responses did McCones provide that they could not have gleaned from other papers? If they are being kept secret, the CIA must believe that they contain information that could be harmful to the agency. According to Morley (2019) the National Archives announced in April 2018 that 15,834 assassination documents remain redacted, the majority by the CIA and FBI. These files will remain sealed until at least April 2021. The CIA engaged in a cover-up. The CIA has indeed concealed information. The CIA halted both official government investigations into why John F. Kennedy was assassinated (Wilkes, 2015). That begged the question of what they were hiding, what else they were concealing from the public, and what was behind the closed doors.
Phil’s World Stock (2017) stated that in response to the intelligence agencies’ lobbying, Trump said he wouldn’t let all of the records be released. Instead, he said he would take the last-minute advice from his national security agencies that some of the records be redacted. Phil’s World Stock also stated that the White House officials said that while 2,800 JFK records will be released today, the rest of the records will not be released for 180 days so that agencies have more time to decide what they want to be redacted. People may not know what they are hiding, but they are aware that the government and CIA are not being truthful, not only about JFK’s assassination, but also in many other cases.
As we talked I changed my thesis slightly, and going forward with my paper I will focus on how the conspiracy theory of CIA involvement in assassination of JFK’s impacted people in bad or good. For example how it made them question CAI and Government’s duty.
