It is often said that artists create work that tells a story about life and usually there is a piece of the artist’s life in every work they create. What do you know about the artist after viewing this artwork”?
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I work with collage, drawing, and printmaking to create works on paper and artists’ books that explore the connection of feminine sensuality to nature and its manifestations in modern culture. I work in mixed media and my work is process-driven. I am inspired by patterns in nature that are mirrored in the body. I work with pattern and layering, building up hand-drawn patterns, watercolor washes, and collage of both original prints and found images. The layering involved in collage, printmaking, and bookmaking provides the opportunity for concealment, excavation, and revelation. I consider ways in which women are connected to the earth, as kindred creative spirits, sensual beings, and protectors of nature. Recently I have become interested in the intersection of women’s rights and environmental issues. How is assaults on the environment intersect with attacks on women, especially women who share a divine connection with nature? What does it mean to be female and hold the potential for creation and power while also internalizing the expectations and limitations of a patriarchal society? How can we subvert these cultural expectations and tap into a deeper consciousness, tied to the care of the earth as a way to care for all living creatures? These are some of the questions I wrestle with as I make my work.
