You will compose a summary paragraph for the article. The summary should state the topic and main idea of the article in the first sentence. Then it should list the major details. Summary should be 200-250 words. Your paragraph will be graded on their clarity, organization, and quality of ideas:
• Are the ideas adequately summarized?
• Is the main idea stated clearly?
• Are the major details listed?
• If used, do the minor details add to the summary in a relevant way?
• Is the summary an appropriate length?
• Is the summary free from quotations?
2. Analysis:
You have three elements to analyze in the article:
• Point of view
• Tone
• Purpose
Once you analyze the article for these three elements, construct your paragraph in the following format (organization):
Topic sentence: The article can be analyzed for point of view, tone, and purpose.
– Sentence 1: State the author’s point of view on the topic.
– Sentence 2-4: Give specifics from the text as evidence. How do you know it is the author’s point of view? (Be sure to always use quotation marks when citing an author word-for-word. Also, include the paragraph number for quotations and paraphrases.)
– Sentence 5: State the author’ tone.
– Sentence 6-8: give specific from the text as evidence. What clues in the text suggest the author’s tone?
– Sentence 9: State the author’s purpose
– Sentence 10-12: Give evidence from the text and/or explanations to support your answer.
Conclusion Sentence: The author’s point of view is X, and she has a Y tone with the purpose of Z.
As you can see in the structure of the paragraph, it is not simply stating a claim about your article. Even more important, you must justify your claim. What textual clues suggest the author’s point of view? What is suggested in the text to make you think the author has a certain tone? What makes you think that the author has that purpose?
