Deaths/1000 people 1980: Age 15-24 – 1.154 | Ages 25-44 = 1.733 | Ages 45-64 – 9.559 2016: Age 15-24 = .749 | Ages 25-44 = 1.590 | Ages 45-64 = 6.405 What might account for the changes? I would assess that the mortality rate across the board has reduced due to laws, policies, technology, and medical education. Over the past 40 years, the United States government has taken aim at smoking, heart health, and infant health in attempts to reduce the mortality rate and increase life expectancy. Age restrictions were placed on smoking, indoor smoking was dramatically cut, and tobacco taxes increased heavily. Advancements in medical technology and more educational resources shared about the side effects of tobacco and unhealthy diets could also likely be connected to the reduction in numbers. These reasons are supported by an article by the National Bureau of Economic Research in addition to the argument of addressing low birth weights in infants. I would personally suggest that social media allowing many individuals and organizations to share health focused education and fads exploded in the United States within the past decade. https://www.nber.org/digest/mar02/why-do-death-rates-decline = Question 2.) Age 15-24 Homicide Deaths/1000 1980: 154 2016: 119 What is a possible cause for the changes? I would propose that there has been a reduction in homicides due to the lower numbers of gun violence in 2016 verses 1980. This may come as a shock given the highly politicized topic of "gun control" and recent statements by political figures. However, when looking at the actual numbers reported to the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Statistics from 1980 – 2008 it can be clear that homicides with the use of a gun are lower now than they were in 1980. There was a considerable spike around the early 1990’s, however statistics show that gun related homicides are lower now than they have been in the past 40 plus years. There was a considerable spike around the early 1990’s, however statistics show that gun related homicides are lower now than they have been in the past 40 plus years. Despite recent political and media coverage of the homicides committed with a gun, the majority actually involved a pistol and not an "assault weapon," more properly known as a semi-automatic firearm. Semi-automatic firearms combined with all firearms other than a pistol only made up for almost 4000 homicides in 1980 vs approximately 10500 homicides that involved a pistol. It’s worth noting both categories were lower in 2008 than 1980. It is also worth noting that the largest majority of homicides were committed by both felons and gangs, and it is already illegal for felons to be in possession of a firearm. These figures are summarized in figures 41 and 42. Even with the uptick in gun violence in 2020, the numbers are still below the levels of 1980. This claim is also supported by a study released on April 28, 2022 by the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solution titled, "A Year In Review, 2020 Gun Deaths in the United States." https://bjs.ojp.gov/content/pub/pdf/htus8008.pdf =. https://publichealth,jhu.edu/sites/default/files/2022-05/2020-gun-deaths-in-the-us-4-28-2022-b.pdf = https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2013/05/07/gun-homicide-rate-down-49-since-1993-peak-public-unaware/ B Question 3.) 2016 Heart Disease Age: 25-44 = 163 Age: 45-64 = 1.336 1:12 PM Search 11/27/2022 hp O
/courses/326047/discussion_topics/3328127 Question 3 ) 2016 Heart Disease Age: 25-44 = 163 Age: 45-64 = 1.336 What is a possible cause for this difference? I would propose that social media, health education, and fitness fads are driving the numbers to be lower for heart disease in ages 25 – 44 versus ages 45 – 64. The overall heart disease numbers are trending downward, and these statistics take years to reflect the overall heart health of the general U.S. population. A study produced by American Heart Association Journal (2020) showed that individuals who did the minimum recommended moderate activity, reduced heart disease up to 21%, and adults who did 2 – 4 times the recommended physical activity reduced their chances as much as 31%. Social media has its flaws, but could it be that many more people are encouraged to get outdoors, explore, hike, walk, or workout as a result of its use? There are statistics that report a possible rise in the future, and this could be due to family and social factors. https://www.heart.org/en/news/2022/07/25/getting-more-exercise-than-guidelines-suggest-may-further-lower-death-risk = https://www.acc.org/About-ACC/Press-Releases/2022/08/01/16/37/New-US-Population-Study-Projects-Steep-Rise-in- Cardiovascular-Diseases-by-2060 = Question 4.) What value is there to be found in considering death and the shortness of life? What comes to mind? One of the first things that come to mind when considering the shortness of life are verses like Psalms 90:12 (New International Version), "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." When I consider the shortness of life, it encourages me to make the most of every moment and opportunity in life. Many times, this means saying no to "more" of something else to enjoy more fully the life God has already given me. The preciousness and shortness of life has personally become more prevalent with the recent birth of our first child for both my wife and me. When considering the frailty and shortness of life, it also highlights the societal issues facing America. Wisdom reveals that the biggest crisis in America is the destruction of family and the lack of stability in homes. The solution to save our country begins with the reestablishment of a mother and a father caring for and loving their sons and daughters. If someone were to think they are left out because their home was victim of divorce or parents walking out, like myself or the other 50% of American families, then I would propose a challenge to go and ask someone else to be a father or a mother to you. It would be an honor to grow with you. Holy Bible (2016) New International Version Psalms 90:12 Grand Rapids MI Zondervan 1:13 PM Search 11/27/2022 hp O
