For the past 20 years Eosinophilic Esophagitis (or EoE) has been known to be one of the leading causes of gastro-intestinal disease that effects school age children (Bogale, 2021). Although, with early detection, proper food avoidance, and treatment can help lower the effects or even drop overall rates of infection (Bogale, 2021). Furthermore, to gain more information to improve the identification and treatment of EoE a “Needs Assessment” was given to 60 school nurses in Pennsylvania (Bogale, 2021). The needs assessment determined the school nurse’s familiarity with EoE and if there is interest in including EoE material in needed college courses (Bogale, 2021).
The 19 questions, needs assessment was sent out to 100 different school nurses throughout many different counties in Pennsylvania (Bogale, 2021). Out of the 100 school nurses only 60 nurses replied (Bogale, 2021). The assessment measure 4 different areas of EoE within school age children including;
Familiarity of EoE
Knowledge of treatment
Ability to distinguish between EoE and other GI diseases
Interest in continued education
As for the results of the needs assessment 62% of the school nurses felt they were familiar with EoE and 42% managed the treatment plan for a student with EoE (Bogale, 2021). The one data point that stuck out was that 78% of the school nurses felt that distinguish EoE with other GI diseases, such as anaphylaxis (Bogale, 2021). Lastly, 97% of the respondents were interested in continued education to improve their skill sets (Bogale, 2021).
