Improving work practices
Case Study F – Improving work practices
The youth work residential service you currently work for have a strict code of conduct that was explained to you at Induction. You remember during induction that if you are speaking with youth privately , then you must always keep their bedroom door open when you are in their room .
You notice another staff member go into the room with a client and close the door.
They come out of the room about 15 minutes later and the youth seems upset and is crying.
Your employer, Safe houses , have explained that work practices must be in line with the Code of Conduct and provided you with a link so that you can familiarise yourself with the Code of Conduct.
How could the work practices in the scenario be improved in order to meet the obligations outlined in the Code of Conduct?
you need to suggest a specific change that could be made, Where would a more appropriate location be to hold a meeting? Should you consider having a second staff member present to act as a witness during the meeting?
The work practice in this case study is in regards to the worker holding a meeting in the young persons bedroom and closing the door. How can you change that work practice? Is a bedroom a suitable location for the meeting? How could the meeting be had and still keep it private? What sort of office (think about being able to see, office with a window). Could a second support worker be present? Could the young person have a support person present?
