Françoise Winnick was a French-born Canadian chemist and professor. She won the Prix Acfas Urgel-Archambault in 2015. Winink was born and raised in France, and she received her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1973 from the National School of Chemistry in Mulhouse, France. She received her master’s degree in Toronto, Canada, in 1974 and her doctorate in 1979, later becoming an associate professor at the University of Montreal. As a prominent authority on amphiphilic materials and their self-assembly for the synthesis and characterization of stimuli-responsive polymers since entering academia in 1993, Winnik is now focusing on biomedical applications such as in vivo imaging of nanoparticles.

Françoise Winnik said she returned to high school with a renewed interest in science after winning the Prix Acfas Urgel-Archambault. Her family was very supportive of her desire to pursue school during a time when there were fewer options for women. Indeed, according to Prof. Winnik, her mother stopped her from learning to type as a young child. When her mother wanted her daughter to be better educated and have more opportunities, she worried that this might force her into being a secretary. Françoise learned French and German at a young age while growing up in Alsace. She said her father, who worked for the SNCF, was responsible for her love of travel (National Company of French Railways).
She moved to Toronto to pursue a Master’s degree in English after receiving her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the National School of Chemistry in Mulhouse, France.But the science captivated her, and she decided to work with Peter Yates on a PhD. She then chose to work at the Xerox Research Center, a renowned industrial lab at the time, in order to stay in Toronto. Her proposal to spend a year working in a Japanese university lab was backed by the Center’s director, Robert Marchessault, a former employee of Université de Montréal.She also visited other sites during this time, when Xerox placed less importance on applied work, and kept her company informed about advancements in Japanese academics.
Professor Winnik delivered more than 260 seminars all around the world in addition to having over 350 papers published in esteemed peer-reviewed journals. She had a reputation for being an excellent speaker and was well-prepared when delivering information. Françoise Winnik, a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, was awarded the Clara-Benson Prize by the Canadian Institute of Chemistry in 2006.She received the Macromolecular Sciences and Engineering Division Prize from the same organization in 2011. As previously mentioned, she received the Acfas Urgel-Archambault medal in 2015.She was awarded the Doolittle Prize by the American Chemical Society’s Polymer Science and Engineering Division in 2009 for presenting an outstanding article at the group’s annual meeting, and the Society of Polymer Science of Japan’s International Award in 2010.
