Care Coordination and Interoperable Health IT Systems Standards for Interoperable Health IT

ACTIVITY: Karen Karr is a patient of Dr. Jana Jones. Karen Karr has been having trouble breathing. Dr. Jones is concerned and logs into her EHR to order lab tests for Karen and to prescribe her medication. 

Dr. Jones sends the lab work to Answer Labs. She also refers Karen to a pulmonologist, Dr. Penny Puffer. 

Dr. Puffer receives Karen’s patient summary into her EHR and then performs an X-ray in her office. The image is uploaded from Dr. Puffer’s radiology system into Dr. Puffer’s EHR.  

Karen Karr uses ABC pharmacy and manages her medications with an app on her phone that interfaces with Dr. Jones’ EHR. Karen’s Health Insurance is HealthSafe. 

INSTRUCTIONS:  

Using a Word Document, draw a picture with boxes representing each system involved and arrows to show data flow between the systems.

Label each arrow with the type of data being sent and the Health Content Standard being used. Select standards from: HL7 V2, NCPDP Script, HL7 CCDA, X12, and HL7 FHIR. Note that there might be more than one right answer.  Pick the standard that you think is most appropriate and most widely adopted for the specific data flow.

Read the activity and follow the instructions above. Submit your assignment in a Word Document. This assignment will require you to be creative and use multiple features available in Word. 

Expected Outcomes:

The end result will be an interface diagram. The diagram should show existing standards and their purpose.
