The “Modern Plague,” AIDS, is proving both deadly and most costly to those who contract the disease and to others who are directly and indirectly affected.
The “Modern Plague,” AIDS, is proving both deadly and most costly to those who contract the disease and to others who are directly and indirectly affected. Trace these costs beyond those who actually contract the disease. What is the nature of these costs and who incurs them? In other words, explain how AIDS (at least in some respect), is a problem for society and not just those who have the disease.
DISCUSSION BOARD FORUMS- For Discussion Board Forums the student will respond to the prompt given for the particular forum. The following criterion will be used to grade student DISCUSSION BOARD forums
———————————————————————————————
MAKE SURE TOO CITE THE 2 SOURCES AND APPLY A SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY
Plz make the format of the writing exactly like the example and please cite the sources just like the example as well
1- SOURCES- Find 2 sources (books, internet sites, your textbook, etc.) that support (or relate to) your position pertaining to the question on the forum. You can even use sources that are against your position- and elaborate (reasonably) with logical standpoints on how you perceive the source’s position is inaccurate (usually with information from one of your supporting sources).
Websites like Wikipedia, about.com, and other websites like these are not valid sources for this assignment, however, you can use sources referred to on those websites about a particular topic.
2- CITATION- GIVE AN MLA CITATION FOR EACH SOURCE YOU USE. iF you wish to use ASA (American sociological association) format for citing, you can. Web addresses and retrieval dates MUST be added to your citation if you use an internet source.
3– SUMMARIZE- Give a summary for each source of the information found in your chosen sources (see number 1 above). A brief summary is required for each source used concerning your answer to the forum question.
4- OPINION- Give your opinion based on the information you collected from your sources. A few sentences will suffice, or paragraphs, it is your choice.
5- CHOOSE and APPLY a SOCIOLOGICAL APPROACH – FUNCTIONAL or CONFLICT or SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM-
1- Choose a perspective (be sure to give the textbook definition for the sociological perspective you choose)-
(1) structural-functional approach (read about it in the textbook)
(2) conflict approach (read about it in the textbook)
(3) symbolic interactionist approach (read about it in the textbook)
I choose this one (bolded one)
2-relate your chosen theoretical perspective to the question in the forum—
You might need to be creative. Find a way that your chosen sociological perspective is relevant to the question and your perspective. The point of this procedure is to illustrate your understanding of (one of ) the three sociological theories in the textbook and how the perspective relates to social problems and research.
EXAMPLE of DISCUSSION BOARD FORUM ENTRY DONE CORRECTLY- (the following example is from a student in a previous class)
Source 1 states a lot of research done on race and class, specifically with home ownership. “A 2001 Brookings Institution study showed that “wealthy minority neighborhoods had less home value per dollar of income than wealthy white neighborhoods.” The same study concluded, “poor white neighborhoods had more home value per income than poor minority neighborhoods.” (Brown). The research was done on the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the United States and also states that homes in white-majority neighborhoods appreciate in value more than homes in minority-majority neighborhoods, which begins when a neighborhood is more than 10% black and increases with the percent of black homeowners in the neighborhood. The source also controls the social class of the households surveyed and found that black/minority neighborhoods are still worth less than white neighborhoods.

Source 2 states that women in the U.S. make 78 cents for every dollar to their male counterparts. The wage gap in the U.S. not only affects single women but women with families as well. “Nearly 1.4 million married couples with children relied exclusively on women’s earnings at some point in 2013, representing 5.6 percent of all married couples with children . . . In 2013, more than 14.8 million married couples with children relied on both parents’ earnings, representing 59.7 percent of all married couples with children.” This article shows the disparities families face when women are not treated fairly in the workplace, but also highlights the wage gap within the race as well, which also affects families.

OPINION: I think both sources show valid statistics that prove that race, class, and gender are the three most significant factors affecting families in the U.S. Although the first source focuses on race and class, the second source focuses an all three, showing disparities not only between men and women but also between women of different races and social classes as well, which further prove how class and race affect families. Although these two sources narrow the problems faced by families to home ownership and wage equality, further research shows that it affects so much more than those two examples.
SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE: I would choose the conflict theory to relate to this proposition, because with the conflict theory (1) conflict is natural and inevitable in all human interaction, including family systems, and (2) the focus is on society as an arena in which individuals and groups compete over limited resources and fight for power and control. Therefore, there is an emphasis on certain groups dominating society to maintain order, that group in this case is rich, white men.
New medical technologies have contributed to new ethical issues in the treatment of illnesses. What are some of these ethical issues? (ex: will the use of computerized technology decrease patient/healthcare worker interaction in healthcare, including nursing? Will patients begin to substitute mechanized health assistance for a lifestyle change and self-motivation for progress? Who is responsible for any unintended consequences of medical technologies?) How would you resolve them?
