Common ground – The shared basis that exists between conflicting disciplinary insights or theories and makes integration possible.
I think the definition of common ground complements and extends the definitions of interdisciplinary studies and interdisciplinary by making the integration of multiple disciplines possible, and by sharing the same goal of wanting to integrate insights in order to form a more comprehensive understanding. Being able to find common ground between multiple conflicting disciplines is how it ultimately complements interdisciplinary studies.

It explains simply how we are able to comprehend so many different perspectives, because common ground is implicit in the concept of integration. Furthermore, it comes from cognitive psychology’s theories of common ground and emerging field of cognitive interdisciplinarity. “Cognitive psychologist Clark defined common ground in social terms as the knowledge, beliefs, and suppositions that each person has to establish with another person to interact with that person”(p. 19, Interdisciplinary Research).Rainer Bromme believed the theory of cognitive interdisciplinary calls for discovering or creating the “common ground integrator” by conflicting assumptions such as theories, concepts, values, or principles can be integrated.

Common ground is a central concept in the textbook, because it involves the use of multiple disciplines, integrating disciplines that find one solution, and common ground helps have a concrete understanding of a topic from each discipline. Creating common ground is an essential part of every interdisciplinary project, because it shows that each discipline and insights of a research topic is respected, understood, and integrated to finding well rounded solution or explanation.
4. How did this exercise inform your perspective on the idea/concept of common ground; explain.
It informed me no matter the circumstances or conflicting disciplinary insights that integration of disciplines is still possible, and that one way of teaching can’t always answer a question and that opposing views can come together.
5. After doing this discussion board exercise, do you feel more empowered or proficient when it comes to doing interdisciplinary research? Defend your answer.
I feel like I have a more solid understanding of interdisciplinary studies and how they’re really applied to research , also how even though disciplines may oppose each other certain aspects of the discipline can still be brought together.

The transition from a discipline to an interdisciplinary point of view is a point of convergence in the interdisciplinary research process. Allen Repko (2007) traces the creation of a point of agreement for research activities.2 To illustrate the purpose of interdisciplinary commonality, he talks about the analogy of a viaduct. Insights from relevant disciplines that are in conflict with one another are on the near side, and the interconnected retailer’s new frontier is on the furthest side. The area between discipline as well as multidisciplinary work is known as common ground. Interdisciplinarity utilizes closely related fields of study in terms of metaphysics. Disciplines being far further apart metaphysically have a lot of interdisciplinarity.

The second situation occurs when individuals hold contrary opinions on a specific topic due to divergent presumptions or beliefs. Establishing consensus on a third occasion I needed when researchers from various fields needed to create a common language, community developers needed a comprehensive plan, and businesses needed a strategy to create and market a new product, conclusion, or rule for a specific action. Even when dealing with these kinds of concerns, it is frequently possible to forge common ground because they are frequently emotionally charged, supposedly reducing nations of common ground to mere wishes thinking.
