1. This assignment is an analysis assignment. It does not ask for a summary or description. You may provide a very brief summary, such as within two sentences, at the beginning of your paper. This is to provide context for your reader, so your reader understands what is going on in the talk.

For example, if you want to evaluate a part of the talk as “boring” or “exciting,” you could state that “this part is boring”; then, you would need to explain and describe what is boring and why. The same goes for whether it is exciting or not.
2. Your first paragraph is your introduction. Your reader needs to know what it is you are doing. For this reason, you need to clearly state:
offer a sentence or two of summary, a brief overview of what it is about
state the thesis: how do you evaluate it? Is it good or bad? If so, what do you mean by good or bad? To whom? Why? How persuasive is the speaker?
Here you may also mention the appeals that the speaker tends to rely on the most.
3. After you end your introduction, you will need to clarify how you are analyzing the talk. You may structure your paragraphs based on how the talk progresses. Make sure to clarify how the speaker is aiming to persuade the audience. How is she/he using a rhetorical appeal or a set of rhetorical appeals?
4. You do not need to devote a paragraph to each rhetorical appeal. Many of you have commented on how sections of your talk mix in appeals. For example, the speaker may say something about herself/himself and offer a joke. That could be an appeal to ethos and pathos simultaneously. Comment on why this is especially effective
5. As you continue your body paragraphs to support your analysis, you will eventually come to an assessment or evaluation or judgment, or criticism of the overall talk. Make sure to clarify very specifically how you judge it. Don’t just say it’s “great” or it’s “awful.” Probe into those terms: it’s great in the sense that (fill in the blank here _________) or it’s awful in the sense that (again, fill in the blank _______________).
