Illegal Dumping at Atkins Circle Apartments Atkins Circle Apartments and Townhomes is located in Charlotte, North Carolina in the 28277 zip code. Atkins Circle is one of the largest upscale communities of apartments in Ballantyne, neighbor to Toringdon Circle Shopping Center, home to many popular restaurants such as Viva Chicken and Hickory Tavern, Novant Health medical center and other medical practices, as well as retail stores such as Pike Nurseries. Due to it’s great location, the sheer volume of people transitioning through the neighborhood is unknown making the community an easy target for individuals looking to illegal dump causing its residents the incapability to dispose of their trash due to the lack of space in the dumpsters. Illegal dumping, also known as “midnight” dumping, is the term used to describe disposing of waste in unauthorized areas. It is an environmental crime. Atkins Circle Apartments and Townhomes community was built in 2004 and each building has 3 stories with 569 units, housing more than 2000 residents although the exact amount of residents is unknown according to the community’s website. Most residents at Atkins Circle Apartments are between college and middle-aged adults with small children. The vast majority of residents and employees have a normal business schedule – typically Monday through Friday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM – so it seems that the dumpster is used for unproper waste disposal after the community’s employees working hours, specifically during the night so Zubiate 2 it can go unnoticed. As a result, the improper disposal of non-household items causes major health risks to the residents and the environment. Multiple residents explain their health concerns and frustration after observing on numerous occasions construction debris and hazardous materials being disposed into the community’s dumpsters leaving them with no option but to leave their trash on their front porch or inside their homes attracting pests into their home because there is no room left for them to dispose of their trash (WCNC Staff, 2015). Furthermore, trash disposal of bulky items in Charlotte NC, isn’t that expensive. For example, Foxhole Landfill charges between $25-$50 per load, the price varies by weight but this price seems fairly affordable for the construction segment (Mecklenburg County’s Full Service DropOff Centers, n.d.). There are three landfills in a 5 mile radius of the community which can give a clear perspective of the reasoning behind not simply going there to dispose of the trash. Residents of Atkins Circle Apartments face serious Human health risks since illegal dumps’ have the capability to provide breeding places for insects, rodents, and other pests. If residents are unable to dispose of their trash they are also attracting these into their homes. “Dumpsites with tires are prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Tires can hold large quantities of stagnant water. This water allows the mosquitoes – which might carry encephalitis, West Nile Virus or other dangerous diseases – to breed 100 times faster than normal” (Illegal Dumping | NC DEQ, n.d.). In addition, Illegal dumps pose a very dangerous fire risk to the apartment community, since the construction of the apartments is made off of drywall fire spreads rapidly and can put all residents in fatal danger. Most of the improper trash disposal in the community comes from construction materials and these materials have asbestos, “Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring silicate minerals made up of thin, microscopic fibers. Asbestos offers heat and chemical resistance, fireproofing and strength” (Strand, 2022) Drywall, shingles, ceiling tile, Zubiate 3 insulation and vinyl flooring are all examples of common construction waste found in the community, all of these cause a chemical hazard. Asbestos fibers have serious health effects If you breathe them in, you automatically increase your risk of several serious diseases, including asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer their exposure increase your risk significantly for cancers of the digestive system, including colon cancer. “Estimates show half of the housing in the United States contains some lead-based paint. Demolition or reconstruction waste from these estimated 64 million homes should be carefully disposed of to avoid risking lead contamination. Exposure to lead or lead poisoning is a risk for children and adults. Lead poisoning is most commonly found in children due to their smaller size. High levels of lead in children have been shown to result in learning disabilities, behavioral problems and mental retardation” (Illegal Dumping | NC DEQ, n.d.). In the same way, the environment is affected by the poor decisions of people that participate in illegal dumping. Some of the impacts this problem has is the pollution of state waters including ground water, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, etc., it also damages the soil quality, and it affects the air quality for everyone even disrupting wildlife habitats. In effect, the impact this problem has on animals is serious and it can adversely affect many native species of plants and animals. When animals eat or drink from the waste it can cause health complications and even death. The toxins from waste can leach into the surrounding environment, killing plants and destroying the food source of local animals such as deer, coyotes, variety species of birds and insects (Illegal Dumping | NC DEQ, n.d.). “Many household appliances and other litter contain harmful chemicals which can be extremely damaging when released. For example, refrigerators and freezers contain either tetrafluoroethene or chloro-fluoro-carbon, both of which destroy the ozone layer” (How Does Illegal Dumping Affect the Environment?, 2022). Zubiate 4 Equally as important, is the toll this problem as a whole has on Atkins Circle residents, unfortunately most residents experience great frustration when they move into their apartment since the surprise that they are not always able to dispose of their trash will take them by surprise since they are unaware of the local issue. As a result, they experience feelings of moving out and will then become very unhappy due to the costs of moving out, the increase on trash disposal imposed by management and the stress of having to look for another place to live. “Where we live is a matter of medical interest. Geospatial medicine, sometimes called geomedicine, studies how location affects our health and well-being. Just as a person has a genetic DNA, a person has an environmental DNA, says biologist and geographer Amy Blatt, author of Health, Science, and Place” (Rough, 2018). It is important to feel stable and happy in your home, a person’s wellbeing has been associated with longer life expectancy and healthier life outcomes. Previous studies have also proven that where someone lives can improve or diminish well-being. Living in a safe and clean environment also affects our health and this is not always the case in the community due to the lack of dumpsters or space in the dumpsters for residents to dispose of their trash. Trends show illegal dumping is rising in North Carolina. Rising disposal costs and an increase in building are contributing factors but should not be used as an excuse to illegally dump on private property. Some individuals might believe that disposing of small amounts of construction material doesn’t cause that big of an issue but they are wrong, Illegal dumps are not just ugly, they also impact human health, damage the environment and can discourage economic development (Illegal Dumping | NC DEQ, n.d.). There are a variety of reasons why someone may choose awful activity but it seems as if it were laziness and the thought of saving money Zubiate 5 by not properly disposing the trash in a landfill and none of these reasons are important enough to believe this issue isn’t real or isn’t important. To conclude, the problem of illegal dumping has major effects not only in Atkins Circle residents but on the environment, and local animals. The safety of residents and local animals should be a priority for the people that commit this crime. Residents like to take pride in their communities and towns, but illegal dumping make that very hard to do because of all of the negative emotions and experiences it has caused them. Dumpsters that are accessed easily and that are not cleaned up promptly often attract additional illegal dumpers. It is quite common for a “little” dump to turn into an everyday problem for the community. People are more likely to dump on property where trash already exists and residents shouldn’t be held liable for costs imposed by management due to the lack of security measures to prevent this problem
