What exactly is the difference between the medical model and the social model of disability?
I have to select an environmental barrier, or different ‘constraint’, such as participation in a community program and describe perspectives from both the medical model versus social model of disability.
For example, We typically host a number of Mindfulness and Yoga classes in our newly renovated Academy for Mindfulness and Yoga, that’s located in Matthaei, room 128. A student in a wheelchair enrolls in this class, however, to access the class you may all recall that there are 5 stairs you must descend in order to land on the wooden floor.
The social model of disability purports that the room is not at all compliant with ADA recommendations for accessibility, and the problem is Wayne state university lack of willingness to make the necessary accommodations. The medical model of disability suggests the individual is in a wheelchair and therefore may be denied certain access to community based or school programming. The issue lies within the individual because they are constrained to a wheelchair.
Select a different example and describe a position from both models, the social model and the medical model.
