Scientific Research and Ethics
Discussions are an opportunity for you to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively, interact and challenge your peers respectfully, and support your writing with examples and scholarly resources. Be sure to answer all questions and view the rubric to be sure you can earn maximum points.
The ability to find, read, and evaluate scholarly research is critical for meeting the goals of psychology: describe, explain, predict, and control behavior. Along with this, psychology professionals are expected to adhere to the American Psychological Association (APA) ethical code.
This activity addresses module outcome 1. Upon successful completion of this activity, you will be able to:
MO1: Self-assess your competency in each of the course and concentration outcomes. (CO1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
This activity aligns with the career competencies of written communication and critical thinking.
For your discussion posting this week, address the following:
Identify a behavior that is present in the workplace (yours or another) or another space. This should be a behavior you would like to explain.
Create a hypothesis, based in psychological principles, that explains this behavior.
Find and share two scholarly, scientific journal articles that support your hypothesis. Remember to properly cite and reference these articles in APA format.
Explain whether the APA Ethics Code is applicable to the research described, including your rationale about why it is or isn’t.
Does the research you described comply with the APA Code of Ethics? Why or why not?

Social Justice Issues
Discussions are an opportunity for you to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively, interact and challenge your peers respectfully, and support your writing with examples and scholarly resources. Be sure to answer all questions and view the rubric to be sure you earn maximum points.
Social justice issues are strongly connected to the field of psychology. Using your knowledge, skills, and abilities related to psychology, you will connect your personal experiences in the workplace with social justice issues and psychological theory. If you choose an alternative context or situation (other than the workplace), please explain your decision.
This activity addresses module outcomes 3 and 4. Upon successful completion of this activity, you will be able to:
MO3: Evaluate theories to explain behavior, including advantages and limitations. (CO1)
MO4: Evaluate theories to predict behavior, including advantages and limitations. (CO1)
This activity aligns with the career competencies of written communication and critical thinking.
For your discussion posting this week, address the following:
Identify a social justice issue in the workplace (or other space, if needed) that resonates with you.
Explain a prosocial behavior related to this issue, and an antisocial behavior.
Describe and discuss how the theories associated with these behaviors can explain and predict behavior, being sure to provide advantages and limitations. Provide scholarly resources to support your ideas and writing.
Students in the I-O concentration must include description and discussion of the role of psychological theory associated with negotiation/persuasive skills.

Ethical Complications and Consequences
Discussions are an opportunity for you to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively, interact and challenge your peers respectfully, and support your writing with examples and scholarly resources. Be sure to answer all questions and view the rubric to be sure you can earn maximum points.
As you work on your literature review, you should find some interesting situations. After all, these are related to social justice issues in which there have historically been many ethically questionable studies, and the concept of social justice is certainly not without controversy. In your discussion this week, you’ll identify and discuss at least one ethically complex situation found so far in your review of the relevant literature. Remember that in your literature review, you are being asked to use at least one article that approaches your topic from a biopsychological perspective, and at least one article that approaches your topic from a developmental or lifespan point of view.
This activity addresses module outcomes 2 and 3. Upon successful completion of this activity, you will be able to:
MO2: Explain how the APA ethics code can be used to guide decisions in ethically complex situations. (CO3)
MO3: Justify recommendations for consequences for ethical violations based on APA ethics code requirements. (CO3)
This activity aligns with the career competencies of written communication and critical thinking.
For your discussion posting this week, address the following:
Share your topic and the search terms you’re using to identify literature for review.
Identify a scholarly article from the literature you’ve started that describes an ethically complicated situation.
Explain the ethical problems associated with the literature and why it’s a complex issue.
Explain how the APA ethics code can be used to guide research design and related decisions in similar situations.

Explanations Based on Scientific Reasoning
Discussions are an opportunity for you to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively, interact and challenge your peers respectfully, and support your writing with examples with scholarly resources. Be sure to answer all questions and view the rubric to be ensure you earn maximum points.
When approaching problems scientifically, it’s important to use specific methods and steps. You will remember that one of the first things needed is to operationally describe the problem, and then explain what we see happening. Your mission for this discussion is to demonstrate your application of these steps in real life.
This activity assesses module outcomes 1, 2, & 3. Upon successful completion of this activity, you will be able to:
MO1: Describe problems operationally to study them empirically. (CO2)
MO2: Develop plausible behavioral explanations that rely on scientific reasoning and evidence rather than anecdotes or pseudoscience. (CO2)
MO3: Recognize the systemic influences of sociocultural and personal biases on psychological research. (CO2)
This activity aligns with the career competencies of written communication, critical thinking, and global/intercultural fluency.
For your discussion postings this week, address the following:
Describe a social justice problem you have noticed that occurs in the workplace or another space you have identified. How has this concern come to your attention, and why is it problematic? What could the potential benefits be if this problem is fixed?
Be sure to describe or hypothesize about any sociocultural or personal biases that could be playing a role in your perception or interpretation of the issue. Remember, we all have biases.
Now, operationally describe this problem so that it can potentially be studied scientifically. Remember, operationally describing the problem means that you’ll need to clearly identify variables that can be manipulated and/or measured.
Identify a plausible explanation based in empirical research for this problem behavior, and use peer-reviewed articles to support your theory.
In your responses to others, try to respectfully challenge potential flaws in your peers’ descriptions and explanations from the perspective of recognizing the influence of bias on assumptions.

Module 5 Discussion
Controversy and Solutions
Discussions are an opportunity for you to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively, interact and challenge your peers respectfully, and support your writing with examples and scholarly resources. Be sure to answer all questions and view the rubric to be sure you can earn maximum points.
Many people are uncomfortable with conflict and therefore avoid discussing controversial issues. This is problematic in many ways and in situations, but can be especially challenging in the workplace. When stereotypes, personal biases, and misconceptions go unchallenged in ANY space, problems are allowed to persist and even grow.
It is possible to deal with controversial issues in a constructive manner, creating collaborative team environments. In order for this to happen, healthy interpersonal relationship must be developed that allow the respectful exchange of different opinions and ideas. This often results in better decision-making.
In this discussion, you’ll choose a topic from below and post a written persuasive response plus a short (approximately 45 seconds) video.
This activity addresses module outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5. Upon successful completion of this activity, you will be able to:
MO1: Construct clear and concise arguments, using evidence-based psychological concepts and theories. (CO4)
MO2: Create precise and persuasive arguments with APA writing styles and conventions. (CO4)
MO3: Appraise sources of information as accurate or flawed, based on evidence. (CO5)
MO4: Describe a solution for facilitating an effective workplace or other space. (CO5)
MO5: Implement effective delivery standards in professional oral performance. (CO4)
This activity aligns with the career competencies of oral/written communication and teamwork/collaboration.
For your discussion posting this week, address the following:
Choose one of the following prompts, and create a written response (complete with empirical evidence/scholarly support). Then, record a 45 second video that effectively and professionally presents your persuasive argument. Your written response should NOT be your script, and your video should NOT be a reading of your written response.
Your written work for this discussion is a professional, APA style response to your chosen prompt. In your written response, include details about the social psychological theory and persuasive techniques used, including appropriate in-text citations and references.
Your video is a persuasive, professional oral presentation of your thoughts. For example, think about what you would say and how you would present yourself in a formal workplace meeting in which you want your ideas taken seriously. In your script, be sure to emphasize your oral argument, persuasiveness, and professional presence. Remember, look at our course technical guidance document for help with recording video, and the audio script tips.
Prompts – Choose one of the following and a position:
– Employee surveillance: Employers should/should not be allowed to monitor web/internet usage.
– Incentive pay: Paying employees to motivate and reward employees is/is not fair.
– Gender equality: The gender pay gap does/does not exist and should/should not be addressed.
– Work romance: Organizations do/do not have the right to make policies prohibiting romantic or sexual relationships with coworkers.
– Politics: The political values and beliefs of my coworkers are/are not important.
Students in the I-O concentration must include discussion of why educational or training programs in your chosen prompt’s area are important for leadership development and/or in sales environments.

Module 3 Assignment
Literature Review
For this step of your project, you are submitting a literature review in APA format. As you know from doing your readings for this module, there are many reasons for completing a good literature review, including becoming very familiar with existing research on your topic and knowing the experts in your area of focus. You should follow the instructions below to earn maximum points.
One of the main reasons you are creating a literature review for this portion of your project is to demonstrate your ability to properly find, cite, and summarize research related to your project topic. You will be practicing the skill of reading and accurately summarizing complex ideas from psychological research, but also evaluating this research to determine if it adheres to the APA ethics code.
As you are reading, you will notice the literature reviews included in research studies generally conclude by identifying a gap in the literature—that is, identifying something specific that hasn’t yet been fully explored. Those studies then seek to examine the gap issue, and thus, contribute new research to the body of knowledge in the field of study. Because of the compressed nature of this capstone, your literature review will stop short of identifying gaps and opportunities. That would require many more weeks of research!
Instead, you will conclude your literature review with a section summarizing, in your own words, the most prominent research and findings related to your topic. You must support your summation by drawing upon well-reasoned evidence from your literature review with appropriate citation and explaining how these findings contribute to the literature and collective knowledge in the field of study. Please do not include any discussion of the methodologies used in the studies.
Depending on the number of scholarly sources used, your literature review should be approximately 2,000-2,500 words, and should not exceed 3,000 words. (Word counts exclude title pages, headers, and reference list.)
As you’re working on this assignment, consider the extent to which you drew upon a diverse collection of studies. What have you discovered in terms of themes, trends, and opportunities for further research? Is your list of articles both broad in scope and current? If you are using older studies for one or two of your sources, will you be able to draw explicit connections between those historical studies and contemporary theory and practice? Remember, your literature review will not advocate for or against a particular position, and should not reflect personal opinions, beliefs, or values. Focus on analysis and synthesis, not on summary or description of article content.
This activity addresses module outcomes 1 and 3. Upon successful completion of this activity, you will be able to:
MO1: Evaluate psychological research from the standpoint of adherence to the APA ethics code in psychological research involving human or non-human research. (CO3)
MO3: Demonstrate psychology information literacy by reading and accurately summarizing complex ideas from psychological research. (CO 2)
This activity aligns with the career competencies of written communication and critical thinking.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Write a literature review consisting of 6 – 10 scholarly sources, accurately summarizing each article. This literature review must be submitted in APA format. Your literature review will include an ethics evaluation of each article, indicating whether it adheres to the APA ethics code or not.
For maximum points, your presentation must be submitted by Sunday night and include the following components:
At least 6-10 scholarly sources
The majority of your sources should be current sources (within the last 5 years)
Ethics evaluation of each article
Submitted in APA format
At least one scholarly source must address your topic from a biopsychological perspective
At least one scholarly source must address your topic from a lifespan or developmental psychology perspective

This week, you will create a multimedia presentation illustrating your ability to engage in scientific reasoning in order to solve real problems in the workplace (or another space you have identified). Remember, you should be building on what you have learned and worked on already in the course. What this means: based on the research completed in your literature review in the previous module, you should be capable of describing, hypothesizing, and predicting behaviors directly related to your project.
This activity is about professionally communicating your ideas and demonstrating the learning outcomes for the module. Use the feedback you have received in previous activities to improve your professional communication and presentation skills.
This activity addresses module outcomes 1, 2, & 3.
(CO2)
This activity aligns with the career competencies of oral communication and digital technology.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Create a multimedia presentation with voice-over that meets all of the following:
– Operationally describe your chosen social justice problem.
– Based on the literature review you completed in the previous module, develop at least two plausible behavioral explanations for your identified social justice problem. Be sure to provide the appropriate citations and references to support your claims.
– Explain how bias, specifically unconscious bias and implicit bias, has influenced (or could potentially influence) research in this area.
You should include the scholarly evidence supporting your ideas, properly citing (Author, year on the slide it is used) and referencing (include a “Reference” slide at the end of your presentation) in APA format. Your multimedia presentation will utilize images, writing, and video and/or audio.
Your presentation can be completed in Powerpoint, Prezi, Powtoons, or another platform approved by your instructor.
Be engaging and professional!
For maximum points, your presentation must include the following components:
– 10 to 15 slides, including title and reference slides.
– Voice-over/video by you, presenting the information.
– All the components identified above, under Instructions.
– Identification of a social justice issue present within the workplace and why it is important.
– Empirical evidence supporting your explanations.
– Graphics/images and writing to support your presentation.
It is recommended that you briefly write out a script for yourself before you create the video or presentation. Scripts help you sound more focused and polished while keeping the information clear and concise. Follow the tips located at the beginning of our course to maximize the impact of your script and video.

Module 5 Assignment
Oral Argument and Video
The major purpose of these final assignments in each module is to integrate the information you have learned throughout the current module and the course thus far, and to practice effective and professional communication of your ideas in various formats. For this assignment, you will be writing and submitting your oral argument as a paper, and then creating and submitting a short video. This oral argument assignment demonstrates not only your ability to create a persuasive, evidence-based argument, but also to professionally present your argument orally. You’ll want to consider any feedback you received from peers during the discussion this past week, in order to improve your skills.
The point of your argument and video is to present a social justice issue that exists in the workplace or other space, propose a solution, and provide persuasive evidence designed to convince the audience your issue is important and your solution is viable. You need to incorporate what you have learned from psychology about persuasive communication: what techniques and tactics will make your oral argument more influential?
The reason you are creating a video is because communication through written information is not the only skill needed in today’s world. Communicating your ideas in multiple ways using professional writing and presentation skills is critical for job and career success. This video will help you improve your technical and communication skills, which will be used in any career you pursue.
Use the comments and feedback received during the discussion process this week to improve your performance on this activity.
(CO4)
This activity aligns with the career competencies of oral communication and digital technology.
Instructions:
Be engaging and professional!
For maximum points, your submission for the assignment must include the following components:
– Video of you, presenting your oral argument. This video must be of YOU. The video is not a reading of your written response. The video should emphasize persuasive speaking.
– A written response that uses APA style to outline your persuasive argument and the theories behind it. This written response is not your script for the video.
– Identification of a social justice issue present within the workplace or other space and why it’s important.
– Proposal of a solution, grounded in evidence and theory.
– Evidence supporting your prediction of a solution, including specific persuasive techniques (in your APA style paper, explain the techniques used in your video and why they will be effective).
– The video should be approximately two minutes long.

Module 6 Assignment
Part I: Draft of Presentation
The major purpose of these final assignments in each module is to integrate the information you have learned throughout the current module and the course thus far, and to practice effective and professional communication of your ideas in various formats. For this assignment, you will create your draft of the multimedia presentation with a voice-over. The final version is due at the end of Module 7, and you are expected to incorporate peer feedback and submit a self-assessment of your performance.
On Thursday night of THIS week, the draft of your presentation is due. Please note there is no discussion this week. Your focus should be on giving quality, in depth feedback to the two peer projects you will be assigned to review.
Your reviews of your peers’ projects will be anonymous to them, however your INSTRUCTOR DOES know who is reviewing individual projects and half of your project presentation grade this week will consist of the quality of feedback you provided to both of the peers you were assigned. Therefore, just to reiterate, the grade this week for M6A2 is not only for your draft of your presentation, but for your review and feedback on the presentations of your peers.
This activity assesses module outcome 1. Upon successful completion of this activity, you will be able to:
MO1: Deliver a complex presentation that follows instructions. (CO4)
This activity aligns with the career competencies of oral communication and digital technology.

Module 8 Assignment
ePortfolio
Many individuals use electronic portfolios to collect, store, and highlight their academic and professional accomplishments. Portfolios go beyond traditional resumes and transcripts to really document and provide concrete examples of achievement and specific skills. Here are several examples of how electronic portfolios can be used
Bain, A. (2010, August 17). Undergraduate studies ePortfolio. (Links to an external site.) Retrieved from https://www.slideshare.net/AmandaBain/my-ba-psychology-eportfolio
Lin, X. (n.d.). Welcome to the journey of knowing Xi Lin (Links to an external site.). Retrieved from http://whoisxilin.weebly.com/
For your final assignment, you will start (or add to) an electronic portfolio that can be used to demonstrate to others the knowledge, skills, and abilities you have developed throughout your academic journey in the psychology program.
This final assignment will integrate the information you have learned throughout your degree program, and highlight the products and achievements you are most proud of. Your ePortfolio will be an example of your multimedia and writing skills. You will create an ePortfolio in Portfolium (Links to an external site.) that can serve as a foundation for your ongoing work. This week, your work will focus on the communication of specific career competencies in the form of products you’ve created throughout your academic journey.
This activity addresses module outcome 4. Upon successful completion of this activity, you will be able to:
MO4: Demonstrate evidence of skill sets desired by psychology-related employers. (CO5)
This activity aligns with the career competencies of digital technology and career management.
Instructions:
There are no set rules about what to include in your digital portfolio. It can be as broad and comprehensive as you like. For this assignment, however, your electronic portfolio needs to include the following components in order to earn maximum points:
– Welcome. Summarize who you are and what can be found in your ePortfolio.
– Career objective/profile. Write a specific and clear statement.
– Résumé. Summarize your education, achievements, and work experience. Include detailed information on your skills. You can keep this simple for this assignment.
– Artifacts. You must include your project for this class. All other products are optional, but this might be a good time to collect your samples of videos, presentations, papers, and letters of recommendation.
You might be asking, “How do I use Portfolium?”
First: Log in to Portfolium (Links to an external site.) Because you are an enrolled student at Excelsior College, you should already have an account. Simply enter your email and MyExcelsior password to login.
Next, follow the three steps (Links to an external site.) to get you started.
When you “Add Project” in the third step, simply title it “Capstone Assignment”. This is where you will add all your “artifacts” if you decide to upload other projects or evidence of your skills. Be sure to “Publish” your project.
Finally, “share” your portfolio with your instructor. You may “Save as PDF” from your home profile page on Portfolium and then upload to your assignment, or you may share your personal Portfolium link which can be found under your Name (see image).
