Despite how bizarre your memory of it may seem or maybe it was that confusing you chose to have no memory of it at all, I can assure you that last night every single one of us had a dream, and that dream has a purpose that stems from somewhere deep in each of our subconscious’ … unless for that matter you’re an insomniac and cannot sleep, then I would be completely wrong. But my point is, and the question I would like you to ponder upon throughout this talk is, what actually is a dream? As it seems to be that every day, day, or night we all adopt this universal experience regardless of our age, race, creed, or gender.

Often when we are feeling low it is typical for us to sleep to suppress our feelings as we don’t want to come to terms with what we have encountered that day. However, when we dream, we tend to process what we feel and why we happen to feel that specific emotion even if we aren’t fully aware that we are doing so. The emotional regulation dream theory states that the function of dreams is to help us cope with our trauma or emotions in a ‘safe space’ without the difficulties of life interfering. The way sleeping supposedly helps us deal with our issues is by creating new memories of the experience in our heads and stripping the current emotion from it which explains why we feel much better after sleep whilst we endure dark periods of our lives. Psychologists also suggest that dreaming plays an active role in consolidating a memory (which relates to my previous point) and that in terms of trauma, our memory of the situation isn’t exactly integrated into our brains because at the time of trauma we feel mentally weak, overwhelmed and aren’t able to acknowledge. much. Due to this, it is understood why dreaming plays an active role in our life as it’s as if it permits us to live vicariously through our dreams, acting as a hideaway for when we don’t really feel like living.
