Several studies show that greater motivation and engagement would predict greater academic outcomes. Engagement mediates the relationship between motivation and academic performance. It was revealed in the study conducted by Gustani (2020) that the student’s motivation toward their online learning is intrinsically affected more by their ambition to learn new knowledge and enjoyment in experiencing new learning methods. It was also influenced extrinsically by external regulation and environmental conditions.  However, amotivation or the state of lack of motivation also happened due to poor external supporting facilities. Akue et al. (2017) argues that the facilitators must keep in mind the factors that could motivate or demotivate the learner. Plan accordingly the course to make it successful and productively engage learners. It is emphasized that students active engagement, teachers’ role in the online learning environment, feedback and evaluation process, and technological competencies are some of the important points which should be considered by educators to plan and implement an effective online learning experience for the learners.

In the Philippines, Cabansag et. all (2020) mentioned that generally, students are motivated to conduct their online classes. However, there are problems encountered during online classes such as poor internet connectivity and peer influences which hindered the flow of the teaching-learning process. It is also revealed in the study conducted by  Mamolo (2021) stated that slow and unstable internet connection, less motivation to do self-study, plenty of activities at home, and chores were some of the main reasons students got difficulties in learning the subject matter.  It is agreed by Dilidili (2021) when the findings indicated that the students in distance learning experienced many challenges. The challenges and the motivation to learn were correlated. Therefore; the roles of teachers in distance learning were highlighted, including the role to teach, the role to guide, and the role to inspire which should be strengthened to support students’ engagement in distance learning. Tran et. al (2022) suggest that both motivation and engagement are important for understanding the lessons.

These relevant findings have strengthened the claim that the phenomena should be investigated to address the low level of motivation, engagement, and participation of students in attending online learning.
