Open the play with an inciting incident.  Then, write your way to a point of attack, fairly soon after the play opens.  You could have a second character enter in order to induce a point of attack. The conflict may simply arise from something related to setting—maybe one character is comfortable in this place, while the other is not.  You may stop the play after your point of attack, or you may continue on for a few more beats.

SETTING

Present day. Eve’s house. 

In Eve’s kitchen: nicely furnished with modern appliances and fixtures. The sun shines through the bay windows on to Eve and Gwen. Gwen is briefly in town visiting. Both casually dressed and seated at a round wood table, cupping mugs. Laughing and smiling as they catch up. Waiting for Nathan to arrive.

EVE: I can’t wait for you to meet him; I think you’re really going to like him!

GWEN: You’re beaming! You’re in love with him!?

EVE: (Looks out window smiling.) Yea, I think so.

GWEN: (Holds Eve’s hands on table.) You deserve to be happy. I wish mom and dad could see you right now. 

(Both teary eyed, look at each other in silence. The door to left of them suddenly opens. Enter Nathan.)

EVE: There he is! (Rises, hugs Nathan, then turns toward Gwen smiling.) Gwen this is Nathan! 

(A beat)

EVE: Gwen, are you okay? 

GWEN: Yes, sorry. (Gwen slowly rises and shakes Nathan’s hand.) It’s nice to meet you.  

NATHAN: (A short beat.) Uh yeah, you too. 

(The doorbell rings.)

EVE: Get to know each other while I see who that is.

(Eve exits.)

GWEN: What the hell!? I thought your name was Nick! Do you make it a habit to hook up with random women in bars when you have a girlfriend?

NATHAN: Keep your voice down or she will hear you! You were the first, I swear.
