Purpose –
choose a work of art to view in person in order to describe and analyze its visual form. You will conduct a formal analysis upon the work including a consideration of its art elements and principles. Additionally, you will demonstrate visual literacy by writing about the experience of viewing an artwork in person, thinking about it critically, and using the vocabulary/terms learned in this class. Enjoy yourself and keep an open mind!
Task –
1. Choose an artwork.
a) Visit one of more of the galleries listed below and select one work of art currently on exhibit.
b) Spend some time looking around first before choosing your paper topic. Take ample time to look at the artwork in detail.
c) You need to see the object in person in order to take notes
d) You must choose an artwork from one of the locations from the Gallery List below.
2. Describe the Subject Matter and Composition
a) Define the subject matter of the work; i.e., describe what you see and what is happening in the work.
b) Describe the composition (visual organization) of the work
i. What are the basic components/images/figures of the composition?
ii. How are they arranged, and how do they relate to each other spatially within the work?
iii. Is there a central figure or element? How do you know? Is the composition rather chaotic, decentralized, and dispersed? Or is it clearly structured and organized? Explain.
iv. Creatte a clear, logical order to your description.
3. Analyze the Visual Fundamentals (Elements and Principles)
a) Identify at least one Element of Art employed by the artist that plays an important role in the artwork.
b) Identify at least one Principle of Design employed by the artist that plays an important role in the artwork.
4. Analyze Experience
i. Why was this artwork created?
ii. What is the larger meaning or message intended by the artist?
iii. How do the visual features of the work you’ve described create that meaning?
b) Experience: Discuss the in-person viewing of this artwork.
i. How does viewing a work of art in-person differ from viewing reproduction of the artwork in a book or in another source?
ii. How did seeing the work in person help you appreciate its visual form and understand its meaning better?
iii. What is the relationship, if any, between this work and the ones alongside it as part of the larger exhibition?

This drawing has been discussed over many decades as a preliminary drawing for a painting, off to college , a 1956 illustration that was used as an advertisement for the massachusetts mutual life insurance company. This tittle or attribution is not accurate. Rockwell’s completed painting which this is a sketch for, is Breaking Hone Ties, and was the cover reproduction for the September 25, 1954 cover of the Saturday Evening Post.
While the drawing on exhibit served as a preliminary sketch for Rockwell’s well-known painting of the same title, in the final version of the painting , the middle-aged man, the young man, and the dog sit on the running board of a pick-up truck rather than on a bench with a building behind . In both the painting and the drawing, the young man waits with a train ticket in his pocket. The source material used by Rockwell for the drawing were photographs that he made near the Philmont Scout Ranch, outside of cimarron, New Mexico.

Blackburn freeze – framed a scene from a now-classic movie, The Tender Trap (1955). In this particular Image Frank Sintara and Debbie Reynolds, paragons of 1950s cinema, dance in a New York apartment. Blackburn highlights the gentle dynamics of the scene : the slick Hollywood moving picture is frozen with gestures of loosely applied paint in pastel- like colors, a popular production given sstatus as a historic incident.
